Super Mega Baseball Update: Metalhead Software Acquired by Electronic Arts

Metalhead Software, the developers behind Super Mega Baseball 3, will officially be joining the EA Sports team! The big announcement arrived as Electronic Arts announced they acquired the game developers to continue growing their baseball title. The news arrives as EA has been making all sorts of major moves recently to improve upon their sports titles heading into the future with next-generation gaming.

Super Mega Baseball gives update they will join EA Sports

Electronic Arts released an official press release on Wednesday, May 6, indicating that they’d acquired Metalhead Software. The terms of the deal were not disclosed. However, it appears this will be a major win for Metalhead Software and Super Mega Baseball. Additionally, it will give EA a baseball title to work with, as they try to compete with the top title around, San Diego Studio’s MLB The Show.

“Our team has worked hard over the years to refine a formula that uniquely mixes an arcade style with deep on-field gameplay and innovative co-operative and competitive multiplayer experiences,” Scott Drader, Co-Founder of Metalhead Software said.

“In this next chapter, we’re excited to leverage EA’s power and reach to bring our titles to a broader audience and to take some ambitious next steps in the development of our future titles,” Drader said of Metalhead joining EA Sports.

Based on the press release, Metalhead originally started in 2009 with Scott Drader and Christian Zuger as co-founders. Their team will continue working from Victoria, BC where their studio is based. The partnership with EA Sports will help “expand the Super Mega Baseball franchise.” It should also allow Metalead to “deliver new and engaging entertainment and sports experiences.”

Super Mega Baseball 3 is the current version of the beloved baseball game. Based on a Metalhead Software Reddit thread, they will continue to provide the community game updates. They said those updates would be “smaller in scope” as they focus on their future projects. However, update 7 is going to be coming at some point.

EA making big moves to expand sports library

The Electronic Arts acquisition of Metalhead to bring Super Mega Baseball to EA Sports is one of several moves that VGR has reported in the past several months. Another huge move arrived with the announcement that has football video game fans really excited. They announced they’ll be bringing back an EA College Football title at some point in the future.

Another move arrived with the announcement that they’ll bring out EA Sports PGA Tour with a release date to be determined. It will feature real-life courses from the PGA Tour. The company last released a title in the PGA Tour franchise with Rory McIlroy PGA Tour in 2015.

That news arrived in conjunction with news that golf legend Tiger Woods signed a multi-year deal associated with 2K’s PGA Tour franchise. It marks the return of Woods to the world of professional golf video games. So EA will attempt to compete with the man once associated with their franchise.

Last but not least, EA made an acquisition of Codemasters and will handle the F1 franchise. They’ll release a new F1 game in July of this year for the current and next-gen consoles as well as Windows PCs.

Don’t forget the well-known lineup already associated with EA Sports. There are Madden NFL, FIFA, NHL, and UFC titles currently in rotation. EA can use real-life athletes in these particular games. That isn’t necessarily the case with PGA or Super Mega Baseball. Still, fans hope EA can improve upon the golf and baseball titles in the future rather than hurt them.
