Total War: Three Kingdoms Mandate of Heaven DLC is Now Available

Mandate of Heaven, the first Total War: Three Kingdoms DLC release of 2020 and its largest expansion yet, is now available to download on Steam. The DLC, which includes six new playable warlords and an entire new campaign set ten years before the main game, gives players the chance to experience both the Yellow Turban Rebellion and the Qiang uprising, not to mention the events that lead up to the original campaign.

New Content in Total War: Three Kingdoms Mandate of Heaven

Announced late last year, the Mandate of Heaven DLC is the second Chapter Pack DLC for Total War: Three Kingdoms. The first, Eight Princes, launched around five months ago. While that expansion featured a campaign set 100 years after the main game, this pack stays in more familiar territory. Several of the characters from the core campaign, including Cao Cao, Liu Bei, and Liu Biao, are all playable in the new campaign, albeit with different starting positions. Dong Zhuo even has new character art to represent him before he becomes the tyrant with whom players should be familiar.

The new campaign also introduces six new characters, all of whom are key figures in the Yellow Turban Rebellion. Players will be able to play campaigns as Liu Chong, Lu Zhi, or even Liu Hong (the first time an emperor has been playable) as they seek to hold the Han Empire together. Alternatively, you can also play as the founders of the Yellow Turban Rebellion itself; Zhang Jue, Zhang Bao, and Zhang Liang.

Alongside the DLC, players can also now download an accompanying Free-LC. This smaller free release adds Tao Qian as a playable warlord in both the original and Mandate of Heaven campaigns. Finally, the DLC is launching alongside a major game update which includes a wealth of free new content. This includes new battlefield abilities, around fifteen new units, four new legendary characters. Plus, it features new siege weapons like Multiple Bolt Crossbows and Siege Towers. Long-time players will also notice that elements of the menu UI have been reworked. This should make it easier to choose characters and time periods when starting a campaign.
