DICE Clarifies How Tanker and Pilot Classes Work in Battlefield 5

Following the release of detailed breakdowns of Battlefield 5’s Assault, Medic, Support, and Recon classes, DICE recently held a Reddit AMA. The purpose of the event was to respond to fan questions about the Battlefield 5 classes and Combat Roles. The AMA was run by David Sirland, the game’s Multiplayer Producer, Danial Berlin, the Design Director, and Andreas Morell, a Senior Producer.

Fan Questions About Battlefield 5 Classes Answered

During the course of the AMA, the developers answered a host of questions about the Battlefield 5 classes. One question in particular concerned the Tanker and Pilot classes, which are seemingly missing from Battlefield 5. In actual fact, the classes do feature in the game, but in an unusual fashion. According to Andreas Morell, Tanker and Pilot aren’t available as classes for players to choose. They do still exist in Battlefield 5, however. When a player spawns into an aircraft or other vehicle, they automatically shift into either the Tanker or Pilot class. Players won’t be able to customise these classes. However, they will be able to customise the vehicles themselves.

Combat Roles for Battlefield 5 Classes Won't be Restricted More for Weapons

Another question answered by the developers concerns weapon restrictions for Combat Roles; there aren’t any. Some fans were concerned that selecting a Combat Role would restrict the class to a particular weapon. This will not be the case; “The weapon restrictions sits on your class and not on the combat role,” says Morell; “so if you play Support and pick the Machine Gunner role you will be better suited to handle MMGs with the passive traits you have, but you are not limited to MMGs – you can play with any support weapons you like.”

Berlin also explained that the developers at DICE are looking at ways to tweak and change the classes before the November launch; “We are looking into the ability for the Medic to choose between the Medic Pouch and Crate within the first gadget slot,” he explains; “and the same thing goes for the Support – being able to choose between the Ammo Pouch and Crate on Gadget Slot 1.”
