Xbox's greatest esports contribution was normalizing online competitive console gaming through Xbox Live. Before infrastructure like skill-based matchmaking and integrated leaderboards became standard, Xbox established these as core features. This created the grassroots competitive communities that eventually evolved into formal esports scenes across multiple platforms and titles.
