Why do so few games have interesting loot in them?

What do you think contributes to the lack of interesting loot in many games today? Are there specific design choices or trends that limit creativity in loot systems? Additionally, what elements do you believe could enhance the loot experience, making it more engaging and rewarding for players? Share your thoughts!

I think it's a balancing nightmare. Truly interesting loot disrupts game progression in ways developers struggle to account for. Borderlands manages it with procedural generation, but that creates its own problems with most drops feeling like trash. Games that nail interesting loot (like Path of Exile) usually make it their central mechanic and design everything around it, which isn't feasible for games focused on narrative or other systems.
