Should you put an axe in the game world if it can't be used?

What are your thoughts on including an axe in a game world if it has no functional use? Does it contribute to environmental storytelling or immersion, or does it serve as a distraction? How can developers strike a balance between visual elements and gameplay mechanics to enhance player experience?

The Dark Souls approach is my favorite - if something looks important or useful, it probably is, even if not in the way you initially expect. That mysterious axe might be needed for a puzzle later, or reveal a hidden passage, or be connected to a character's backstory. This creates a world where attentive players are rewarded for their curiosity without making everything a weapon. It's about meaningful interaction, not unlimited interaction.
