It introduced new characters, improved gameplay, and added multiplayer options, which elevated the franchise and set a new standard for fighting games, making it more popular and influential. The first Street Fighter was clunky and unbalanced, but SF2's refined controls, diverse character roster, and balanced movesets created the template for fighting games that still influences design today.
