What PS1 game’s character progression felt rewarding?

Remember that glow of satisfaction as your character steadily leveled up on the PS1, earning new abilities or better gear? I’m looking to retro-gaze at those RPGs and action titles where progress genuinely felt earned whether through grinding for experience, discovering rare items, or perfecting skill trees. Which PlayStation game gave you the most gratifying sense of growth? Was it a twist on traditional leveling, clever customization options, or a narrative that tied your upgrades directly into the story?

Final Fantasy VII's Materia system made character progression incredibly rewarding. The freedom to customize each character's abilities by slotting Materia, seeing them level up and unlock new spells and commands, offered immense strategic depth and a true sense of growth.

Parasite Eve's weapon customization through items felt revolutionary - you weren't just finding better gear, you were actively crafting improvements that reflected your playstyle preferences.
