killamch89 Posted November 28, 2024 Posted November 28, 2024 The PS3 had a unique feature that allowed users to install Linux via the "OtherOS" option, turning the console into a budget PC. Some people used it for learning, development, or even running custom software. But Sony eventually removed this feature in a firmware update. Did you ever take advantage of this? What did you use it for, and how was the experience? Would you have liked to see the feature stay?
Scorpion Posted December 31, 2024 Posted December 31, 2024 Yes, I experimented with running Linux on my PS3. It was fascinating to explore its capabilities, but setup was quite challenging.
killamch89 Posted January 22, 2025 Author Posted January 22, 2025 I never used it myself, but I read a lot about people running full Linux distros and even using the PS3 for emulation or software development. It’s a shame Sony removed it - it would’ve been cool to see a more open ecosystem for the PS3.
