  1. What is a popular product of service that is really just a scam?

As I've said in many other posts probably, I'm a big believer that social media is a scam. It's lining the pockets of an elite few by mining our data.
It's having a negative effect on our children's social skills. It's just, icky.

My other one is Google Home/Siri/Alexa/Whatever else.
Seriously, giving advertising companies a wire tap in your home...

I don't quite like it, video games are videogames.

I agree with you, it's definitely something I could do without.

I mean, imply it's going to happen - but that's all we need. We're gaming, we're not here for that.

I dunno I just find technology incredibly exciting. Especially what VR could do for people who are disabled, people who suffer crippling social anxiety etc.

There is so much that can be done with this that could benefit humanity beyond just playing games.

I can agree with this. The possibilities to help people are probably fantastic - but so is that in focusing on medical advancements, ethical studies on the human mind etc.
It's not like we couldn't solve the same problems with different, safer avenues.

Or, we could take the same avenue, and just make sure we put ethics above profitability. Because if we're solving the problems you mention, following the trajectory we are currently on, it's not about helping the vulnerable - it's about profiting from the exploitation of the vulnerable, which is so much worse than what we even have now.

  4. Well damn. I haven't played any.

For me, it's between Vice City and 3...And normally I side with GTA 3. I like the way the story goes in that one! 😄

It's where entire games are text-based inputs/outputs. Like you read a description of a room, then you type "northwest" to walk "northwest" to another room, and so forth.

Oh, cool. Doesn't sound like my sort of thing - but cool.

    Like Monkey-Island?

From the description Stacey gave it doesn't seem like Monkey Island at all.

Monkey Island you select dialogue via clicking predetermined quotes...Not to mention all the clicking on objects etc you click.

Another RPG I'm not familiar with tbh. The screenshot looks old-school but super cool. It looks like a roguelike which is a genre I really enjoy. Thanks for sharing!

Yeah, my older brother played it a lot - which is why I got into it, in like 1996, when I was way too young to understand what it was all about.

It came out in like 1992 I think.

IThat is also a possibility. Just looking at how hooked people are on social media these days makes me wonder what the possibilities and consequences would be of full VR integration...

Unless your every day Joey Sh*t-for-brains on the street starts to have a change of heart and take their humanity and privacy, and general basic rights seriously and see what companies they are allowing to infringe on them and how, I would say it's more an inevitability than possibility.

Let's go back to 2005. How rare was it for someone to give out the real name even on the public internet, because of trust and privacy issues? Like their full name...Maybe some did. Now attach that with marital status, city, workplace etc. all for public view. Very few - and the few that did had a lot of gain financially for it. Then Facebook comes along, utilises the network effect, people's guards lower significantly - they capitalise on and exploit this, and their users. Start retaining data, and selling it (essentially an electronic form of human trafficking.) People were okay with it, I mean, people have nothing to hide, right? (As if that's the point or something.)
Then comes Siri, Google, Alexa...Basically wire taps in our homes. Again, people have nothing to hide - who cares if it's technically always listening.

    It's just infuriating to me.
People need to understand their rights a lot more, but it's a slippery slope and we're sliding down fast.

As for the consequences of VR intergration, chips in our bodies, 'the singularity' etc.
Watch this space. Corporations are going to keep trying to add to their wealth by pushing these boundaries more and more, it all depends on how much the general populous will let them get away with.
It's sad most people don't realise, if we as a collective say 'No. Not cool.' these companies will have to scale it back - their profitability will depend on it, and really that's all that matters to them.

I think that there is already a thread about this one but still... I have learned how to manage things better and how to follow instructions easier from RPG games.

The other thread I think was 'how has gaming influenced your real life' so yeah, very similar.

My answer is pretty much going to be the same - I learned a lot about skating boarding, which was a fixture of my early teens through Tony' Hawk's ProSkater.

The other thing though, The Sims taught me about a bit of economic management. So that's fun.

  9. LOL. I wouldn't rely on Elon 'Rich Kid From The Emerald Mine' Musk to be the guy to bring anything actually substantial but okay - he's trying too hard to be Richard Branston.

Anyway. Hopefully it doesn't come in our lifetime. It sounds like a crappy existence. I guess I could, and probably will, just opt-out of such nonsense.

And on your point about maintaining the system - dude, think about it. THIS IS WHAT THOSE PEOPLE WILL WANT. You put people in another reality, you can data mine their minds and experiences, you can even possibly have some control or at the very least influence over them. People maintaining the system would not oppose this, this is the next logical step within the system.

  10. LOL. Not at all.

I buy whatever cheap phone is around, as I used my phone basically only for calling, maybe texting.

I'm not the most technological guy around - and I have an iPod.

I have a flip phone at the moment. No smartphones here.

  11. Active shooter at Tree of Life Congregation Synagogue in Pittsburgh

Police and other emergency services in Pennsylvania are responding to an active shooter at the Tree of Life Congregation Synagogue in Pittsburgh, officials say. At least 7 people are reported dead.

The incident began just before 10 a.m. ET on Saturday when officers were called to reports of a shooting at the synagogue, which is located at 5898 Wilkins Avenue. The gunman opened fire at responding police officers.

Witnesses who called 911 said the gunman walked into the synagogue and opened fire, but other details were not immediately known. Officers found victims on multiple floors when they began searching the building.

So, this seems to have really only happened in the last hour or so and the story is still developing - awful, awful stuff. But the very stuff that makes me a huuuuuuge supporter of gun control.

At the moment reports are that around 7 are dead.

RIP to the victims, hearts out to all affected by this tragedy. 😞

Yeah, The Parapod is a really good podcast! It's mostly non-fiction and based on real-life stories. It's made up of two guys with really good chemistry. One guy really believes in the paranormal and the other - his best friend - doesn't believe at all. It's a nice mixture of pragmatism, humour and the paranormal. Check out the first episode and I'm sure you'll know if it's for you or not after that! Listening to it around Halloween is timely, too:)

I place 0 stock in Halloween, I'm actually avoiding a Podcast this month because they won't shut up about it. 😛 (Looking at you, Stuff To Blow Your Mind.)
Nah, it sounds pretty good though. I especially love the sound of it not being two people who are already on board.

I'll let you know what I think!

  13. Apu is set to be axed from The Simpsons following racial controversy

AFTER months of controversy surrounding the racial treatment of beloved The Simpsons character Apu, one of the show’s producers has revealed the acharacter will be axed.

“I’ve verified from multiple sources now: They’re going to drop the Apu character altogether,”

producer Adi Shankar has told IndiWire.

“They aren’t going to make a big deal out of it, or anything like that, but they’ll drop him altogether just to avoid the controversy,” Shankar said.

The popular show came under fire over its portrayal of convenience store Kwik-owner Apu Nahasapeemapetilon, who first appeared on the show in 1990.

The criticism of Apu’s character first surfaced in November 2017 with the release ofcomedian Hari Kondabolu’s documentary The Problem With Apu.

It's something I'm kind of shamed to say I hadn't really thought about, but the character Apu really is kind of ridiculous, over the top and insensitive.
Literally a stereotype. I see where the controversy has come from and I kind of applaud The Simpsons for writing him out and moving on.

That said, I'm not a fan of NuSimpsons anyway, so also don't really care what happens.

Aye, I quite listening to podcasts as well. Mainly, Gamescoop and The Parapod. The former is a general weekly gaming show and the latter is a creepy, paranormal focused show that’s really well done.

I'm into hearing more about The Parapod.

Is it fiction or non-fiction? If it's non-fiction I will for sure give it a shot.

Unskippable cutscenes, dialogue or intro screens. I prefer going straight to the action sometimes, especially if I'm simply replaying a game and have seen everything before.

Actually yes, add this to my list as well.

I skip intros and cut scenes as a matter of routine. I mean, maybe if I am really invested I'll watch them - but I'm rarely invested in a game to that extent.
If I wanna kick back and watch something, I have NetFlix.

I still kick myself to this day, my brother wanted it and I was busy getting into the PS2. Not long after did I get an urge to want to play it again.

I guess it was still in the family though - but you had no access to it?
Did it survive? Is it still alive today?

Yeah I love the humor in Curse. Trumps the previous games in my opinion.

Escape From Monkey Island had it's moments - but it definitely is a step back.

"Look at the size of her...Ponytail."

The first two, were certainly nowhere close to as well done as Curse though. I mean, Curse has Murray - and Murray is golden.
