Do bricks really work on clickers in TLOU?

I’ve read repeatedly that you can hit a clicker on the back of the head with a brick in The Last of Us, and this will stun it. But every time I have tried, I’ve just gotten killed. Anyone know if this works or what I’m doing wrong?

IIRC, it's possibly an upgrade that you can unlock for Joel in the skill-trees. I'm sure there's a defensive manoeuvre where you use a brick on an enemy if they grab you. Not sure if that's the same thing. It's been a while 🤔
