But if I'm on land, and not in the water, but can see it, I'm fine. I don't mind laying on the beach and the surf washing over my feet, as long as the water isn't over a couple inches. But anything more than that, and I'll start panicking and have to be rescued.

My point exactly - my mom is also terrified of the water and I know a few other female relatives who have that same fear.
