And if they're fire ants, or even worse, bullet ants, you'll wish you had taken the flies and died from whatever disease they were carrying. However if it's just a typical black ant then I would go with the ants. I've been stung by an African fire ant before while on a trip in Botswana years ago and I still remember it till this day. It was one ant but the pain was so sharp and the area where I got stung felt like it was on fire. If I had a machete that day, I'd probably have taken off my leg in that instant.
