Non-exploration-based games where you just preferred to explore

Back before open world single player games were a common thing, were there are other types of games where you liked exploring more than whatever the main intent of the game was? As an example, I spent a lot of time exploring in MUDs instead of trying to level or compete with other players.

In Broken Swords for the GBA, the amount of places you can explore is very limited but I did anyways because there's all kind of things laying around such as easter eggs and other surprises.
