Blocking and dodging in melee combat

Do you make use of blocking and dodging in melee combat? I’ve found them almost useless in most older games, but I love how dodging works in TLOU 2.

That's part of what I was doing when I am with Mortar Kombat game. I always play with Lui kang, because he has this high skill to dodge punches and that is posed on him.
