“Making your own fun” in RPGs

I’ve been doing a casual text RP with a friend one-on-one lately, and it’s been remarkably easy for us to keep coming up with stuff to do. It made me think back to my old days playing MUDs where for some reason, it was so hard to “make our own fun” when the admins weren’t running world events. It made me wonder why it was so difficult for me back then. What are other peoples’ experiences with this, particularly in MMOs?

I find that games with rich lore and detailed worlds make it a lot easier. The MUDs and text RPs encourage lots of imagination, whereas MMOs often rely on structured content.

The Games that provide flexible gameplay systems and player-driven narrative tools empower me to create my own experiences.

When I collaborate with other players and share idea, it's easier to create my own fun. This makes the game very immersive.
