Should developers be allowed to reconstruct controversial narratives in response to evolving cultural values?

As society’s norms shift, some older games feature themes or depictions now seen as problematic. Should studios revisit and revise these narratives like altering character backgrounds, removing offensive content, or reframing story arcs to align with modern sensibilities? Or does altering original art disrespect historical context and creative intent?

This is a tough one as you will always get gamers who prefer to see the games stay as they are but then you will get younger gamers who play these games, and complain because things are not the same anymore due to the shift in society.

I personally prefer to see the games stay as they are regardless of the shift in society.

Creative works exist in dialogue with their times, and thoughtful revisions can enhance rather than censor narratives. When Hades reinterpreted Greek mythology through contemporary values of inclusivity, it created richer character dynamics while respecting source material. The question shouldn't be whether developers 'can' revise, but whether their revisions deepen understanding or merely sanitize uncomfortable truths.
