Mass Effect combat tips?

I spent like 50 minutes fighting one lone geth armature last night in Mass Effect on casual level. I eventually beat it by standing near it behind a barrier and dodging a lot, but seriously, one shot from that thing and Shepard dies. Anyone have any combat tips for this game? Is it just a matter of using cover like this and being supremely patient, or am I missing something?

Invest in weapon mods that increase damage and use the right ammo type for the right kind of enemy. Geth are highly vulnerable to ammo that damages synthetics.

No problem. Armatures are literal tanks and take a while to take down without proper weapon mods, but they shouldn't be that hard on Casual difficulty.
