That's how games are meant to be played in my opinion. There is always supposed to be something to gain in playing, otherwise it's not necessarily a good task.
I think he's doing more of a generalizing thing which can't really be accurate as a result of what you mentioned with games being in multiple numbers that it's going to be hard to sum up and say it's all like this or that.
It's why I find it off when you point at history, it's supposed to be exact and accurate, there is nothing fictitious about. It's either real or not real.
Imagine the situation where some gaming companies would even make the mistake of not doing the job themselves but contract it out and they have it wiped out.
