  6. Nitro Games has expanded its mobile partnership with Warframe developer Digital Extremes with a $5.5m (€5m) deal. The expansion now puts the combined order value at around $19.4m (€17.5m), with the project expected to be completed in 2025. According to PocketGamer, "the extended partnership and additional funding will lead to ongoing content updates, performance improvements, and optimisations to ensure the game continues to run smoothly on mobile devices." The deal with Digital Extremes also helps Nitro finance its own development portfolio. Nitro Games raised €3.5 million to continue development of its mobile adaptation of Warframe back in February. The companies first agreed to a deal back in July 2021, with the total funding then having reached approximately €12.5 million. source: Gamesindustry

  8. Honestly, I’m not sure. It’s apparently not going to be the same game as before as this time around its going to involve crypto. Last week, The Flappy Bird Foundation announced a game called Flappy Bird. But while the group has been framing it as the triumphant return of a classic mobile game, Flappy Bird’s original developer, Dong Nguyen isn’t calling it a comeback — in fact, he says he’s not involved at all. Nguyen posted as much on X (for the first time since 2017!) this morning, saying he didn’t “sell anything.” The Flappy Bird Foundation wrote in the announcement it shared with press last week that it had “acquired the rights from Gametech Holdings, LLC,” which had secured the trademark from Nguyen, but it doesn’t appear as though that was the result of any dealings between him and the group. source: Theverge

  11. Sep. 22, 2024 / JNS) Herzliya-based online game developer Playtika Holding Corp. (Nasdaq: PLTK) has announced a definitive agreement to acquire Tel Aviv-based mobile gaming company SuperPlay. The deal, valued at up to $1.95 billion, marks a significant milestone in the Israeli gaming landscape and highlights the country’s growing influence in the global mobile gaming market. Under the terms of the agreement, Playtika will pay an initial $700 million for SuperPlay, with the potential for an additional $1.25 billion in contingent consideration over the next three years, subject to meeting certain financial targets. The transaction, expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2024, is poised to strengthen Playtika’s position in the competitive mobile gaming industry. SuperPlay, founded in 2019 by former Playtika employees Gilad Almog and Eyal Netzer, along with industry veteran Elad Drory, has quickly established itself as a formidable player in the mobile gaming space. The company’s portfolio includes two successful titles: Dice Dreams, a fast-growing coin looter game, and Domino Dreams, a popular board game. As of August 2024, these games boasted a combined 1.7 million average daily active users, demonstrating SuperPlay’s ability to create engaging and widely adopted mobile gaming experiences. Robert Antokol, CEO of Playtika, emphasized the strategic importance of the acquisition, stating, “We see the acquisition of SuperPlay as a key move in strengthening Playtika’s leadership in mobile gaming, driving growth with scaled titles, and unlocking new opportunities. SuperPlay’s proven talent and success in navigating complex environments align seamlessly with our team. Together, we’re expanding our ability to deliver exceptional experiences to players worldwide.” source: Jns

  15. ORIGINAL STORY: It's official: Nintendo and The Pokémon Company are taking legal action against Palworld's developer, Pocketpair. The companies filed a lawsuit against the developer today, September 18, seeking "an injunction against infringement and compensation for damages on the grounds that Palworld, a game developed and released by the Defendant, infringes multiple patent rights." Nintendo will continue to take necessary actions against any infringement of its intellectual property rights including the Nintendo brand itself, to protect the intellectual properties it has worked hard to establish over the years," Nintendo's statement reads. The filing is absolutely massive news and follows months of speculation that Nintendo would take legal action over the indie survival game that's been referred to as "Pokémon with guns." Nintendo previously released a statement about Palworld in January, vowing to "investigate and take appropriate measures" against any potentially infringing content. A modder also claimed that "Nintendo has come for me" after posting a clip with Pokémon’s Ash Ketchum in Palworld. But six months later, in June, Pocketpair insisted that Nintendo had yet to make a complaint in response to the "Pokémon rip-off" claims. "Nintendo and the Pokémon Company didn’t say anything to us," Pocketpair boss Takuro Mizobe told Game File at the time. "Of course I love Pokémon and respect it. I grew up with it, in my generation.” NINTENDO AND THE POKÉMON COMPANY HAVE OFFICIALLY FILED A LAWSUIT AGAINST POCKETPAIR. Palworld launched in early access form in January 2024 on PC via Steam and on Xbox as a day-one Game Pass title and catapulted to tremendous overnight success, but also controversy. Pokémon fans were quick to call out the similarities in Palworld, although the indie developer insisted that Palworld is more akin to survival crafting games such as Ark Survival Evolved and Valheim than Pokémon. Pocketpair's community manager even said the team has received death threatsover the backlash. IGN has reached out to Pocketpair for comment source.Ign
  16. Concord game director Ryan Ellis has reportedly stepped down after the beleaguered 5v5 shooter was yanked offline amid apparently disastrous sales, with staff at developer Firewalk Studios said to be in limbo while they await Sony's decision on the future of the game. Concord was removed from sale earlier this month, just two weeks after its launch on PS5 and PC, with Sony offering full refunds to players. In a statement released at the time, Ellis wrote, "While many qualities of the experience resonated with players, we also recognise that other aspects of the game and our initial launch didn't land the way we'd intended." Ellis added that Firewalk would "explore options" and "determine the best path ahead" once the game was offline, but no further statements have been issued since then. According to Kotaku, however, staff at Firewalk have remained "in limbo" in the two weeks following Concord's shutdown as they wait for a decision on both the game and the studio's future. Kotaku says there's also speculation among staff that Sony may decide to set Firewalk to work co-developing one of its many other first-party projects - although "a few" employees have reportedly already preemptively exited the studio, while others are waiting to see what a potential severance package may look like before making a decision. As for Ellis - who previously served as creative director on Destiny 2 - he reportedly told staff last week he would be stepping down from his current role as game director and moving into a support role. "Ryan deeply believed in that project and bringing players together through the joy in it," one former developer told Kotaku. "Regardless of there being things that could have been done differently throughout development...he's a good human, and full of heart." source: Eurogamer

  18. Reuters reports tech company IBM won its lawsuit against mobile developer Zynga, which it sued over patent infringement in 2022. Two years ago, IBM claimedthe Farmville creator was misusing its "foundational" web technology, including data capture and analytics. The two companies had reportedly been negotiating a license since 2014, but those talks repeatedly fell through. IBM's other suits At the time, Zynga was one of many internet companies IBM took legal action against. Earlier this year, a suit against e-commerce site Rakuten was settled, while another against pet goods seller Chewy was dropped entirely. Documents show the federal court found multiple Zynga games fell within the bounds of patent violation. Specific titles listed include the Farmville sequels, Crosswords with Friends, and Wizard of Oz Slots. With the court in its favor, IBM has been awarded $44.9 million in damages. However, Zynga spokesperson Alan Lewis argued those patents were invalid, and said the developer (and its owner Take-Two) plan on appealing the verdict source.Gamedeveloper

  20. Nintendo has announced it will end regular updates for Splatoon 3, two years after the game launched for Nintendo Switch. The news was shared after this week’s special Grand Festival event. Nintendo has regularly updated Splatoon 3 with new weapons, Splatfests, and features since its launch on September 9, 2022. Support for the game’s predecessor, Splatoon 2, also lasted for around two years, with its final significant update arriving in July 2019. “After 2 INK-credible years of Splatoon 3, regular updates will come to a close,” reads a message on the official Splatoon X account. “Don’t worry! Splatoween, Frosty Fest, Spring Fest, and Summer Nights will continue with some returning themes! “Updates for weapon adjustments will be released as needed. Big Run, Eggstra Work, and Monthly Challenges will continue for the time being.” Splatoon 3’s Side Order DLC, the new single-player campaign and final piece of content included in the game’s $24.99 / £22.49 Expansion Pass, was released in February of this year. The Splatoon 3 World Championship 2024 and the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe World Championship 2024 were then held in April. They were originally due to take place in January at Nintendo Live 2024, but they had to be rescheduled after the event was cancelled due to safety concerns Source: Videogameschronicle
  21. Italian police have seized fake vintage consoles and games worth €47.5 million. As BBC News reports, almost 12,000 consoles that stored more than 47 million counterfeit games were seized, including titles such as Super Mario Bros., Street Fighter, and Star Wars. The head of economic crime unit for Turin's financial police Alessandro Langella said the fake retro consoles originated from China and were being "imported to be sold in specalised shops or online." The devices were fitted with non-certified electrical components and were destroyed as they did not meet European safety standards. Nine people have been arrested and charged with trading counterfeited goods and could face up to eight years behind bars. Earlier this year, Square Enix revealed that nine people were charged in connection with distributing counterfeit merchandise in China, with products involving Final Fantasy and Nier: Automata characters. source: Gamesindustry
