What makes a character heroic?
StaceyPowers and one other reacted to Reality vs Adventure for a topic
Right on. There are a lot of situations where characters are heroic, but many times they are doing a quest where they were hired on. I think that heroism has no expectations for rewards. Not for fame, money, gear, or any kind of pride. And intentionally not even getting noticed for the deeds done is even more heroic. And we can assume those deeds were morally right ones. I think a hero has a clear mind and isn't driven by hate and vengeance. Because that would be only a self fulfilled act, not heroism. Heroism is completely selfless. And that is an easy line to cross. I think we all at times has assumed one committed a heroic act, even if it was driven by selfish motivations. That is heroism spoken of lightly. And in a way they still can be considered a hero if it was morally right. The character can go on a killing spree of vengeance and take down an evil enterprise saving a million lives in the process. They are a hero for it. But the true definition for me is completely selfless, which would mean that same character would do the exact same thing, but with the motivation to save people and not vengeance. A knight running to glory and kill a dragon for their legacy is not heroic. It could have saved many lives in the process, but the intention was selfish. God knows a person's motivations. And even many religious people fail in their motivation of doing good deeds. They fear God as their motivation more than doing a good deed as a genuine act. So morality and heroism seem inseparable.2 points -

How about I go with a different post here. Jack from Harvest Moon (going for the one on the 64 and Back to Nature on the PS1). Bringing his grandfather's farm back to life and flourishing with animals and produce. Gives business to the community, makes relationships with neighbors. Eventually gets married and has children to help him with on his farm. Not to mention having the local spirits and gnomes befriend him for his good work for nature.1 point -
Marvel's Avengers Director Leaves Company
killamch89 reacted to Shagger for a topic
I'm convinced it could have been any developer, or even any publisher for that matter, and this game would have been pretty much the same regardless. This was little more than bread and butter for Square Enix with Crystal Dynamics as a developer for higher. A soulless, cooperate attempt to print money at the behest of Marvel crafted with all the passion and heart of a Starbucks coffee. No wonder this dude was fed up. Square Exix is a publisher that can do great things and Crystal Dynamics are a talented developer, but everyone knew what this was even before the game came out and knew that neither of these companies really had their hearts into this.1 point -
What makes a character heroic?
killamch89 reacted to The Blackangel for a topic
True heroism goes unnoticed. Or at the very least, unannounced. There are everyday heroes. People who buy a meal for someone who is homeless and starving. People who help someone carry their groceries. People who don't realize their good deed. Those who go off to war, I don't consider them heroes. I don't consider astronauts heroes. What, specifically, did they do that was heroic? If the soldier ran into a crossfire and pulled out a wounded soldier, or did what Forrest Gump did, then yes he/she would be a hero. But commonly they just work at whatever location they're stationed at. And what did the astronaut do? Scientific study, but how is that heroic? I absolutely love astronomy, but that doesn't make me a hero. Real, true, and honest heroism is small and individual.1 point -
Where do you stand politically?
Reality vs Adventure reacted to The Blackangel for a topic
I have always had the ability to make enemies instead of friends. I was the kid that everyone in school hated. I won't get into how my home life was, because you most likely wouldn't believe me. But needless to say, it was enough that I tried to kill myself more times than I care to try to count. You're right that I am passionate about many things. Others I am blase about. There's something I have said for many years, that sums things up rather well. Love Me Or Hate Me, But You Will Never Forget Me1 point -

I'll leave the rest of your post alone so you don't like hunt me down and kill me or something, but I'll just say that personally I think you're pretty awesome already, based on what limited amount I know of you anyway. I love your passion about like everything because it tells me that you're an honest person and that's something that's important to me. I'm sure the feeling is hardly mutual (like everyone hates me everywhere, seriously), but nonetheless.1 point -
Games that were inspired by a true story
killamch89 reacted to The Blackangel for a topic
It is. The bastard died in 2000. It still surprises me how much tension left my body, and how much weight was lifted off my shoulders realizing that I no longer had to worry about how bad the next beating I was going to get would be. I could put that rifle back on the gun rack, and have my bed to myself. Him dying was one of that absolute best things that ever happened in my life. And I can count the good things on one hand and still have fingers left over.1 point -
What makes for a good puzzle?
killamch89 reacted to The Blackangel for a topic
As odd as it sounds, those are often that absolute most challenging puzzles you can face. We always search under floorboards, or dig up random spots in the ground, toss the bed, and the damn thing turns out to be right there on the table. It's due to the fact that our brains are trained to think that puzzle pieces are hidden somewhere that would be hard to find, not where our eyes would hit on it immediately. Honestly, I wish I had thought of that stipulation. That's a damn good one. Kudos @killamch891 point -
What makes a character heroic?

It's a character who stands up for what is right irregardless of the consequences. One who doesn't expect help but is willing to free the oppressed, one who is willing to give a voice to the voiceless.1 point -
Do games disconnect you from IRL or connect you to it in new ways?
Reality vs Adventure reacted to The Blackangel for a topic
It's a disconnect for me. It gets me away from the real world, which in turn gets me away from a lot of the stressful issues I face. Using a sword with perfect skill (Zelda), jumping on a horse and riding like the wind (RDR2), driving a tank in a nuclear subterranean realm (Blaster Master). Those are things out of possibility for me personally. The last one is also complete fiction. I can't go get on my horse. The swords I own, while fair quality, are beyond anything I have the strength to wield. Which is why when it comes to blades, I tend to stick to those around the size of the one in this pic. But I also tend to have my butterflies and stiletto on me as well.1 point -
Game characters who give us great examples of how to live
killamch89 reacted to The Blackangel for a topic
I would say Charles, Sadie, and Arthur in RDR2. Charles because he is able to keep his head, puts out a commanding aura when he needs, and does what needs to be done when it needs to be done. He doesn't get all hopped up over everything. Arthur because he is a no bullshit kind of outlaw. When something isn't right, he makes it right by whatever means necessary. He'll kill you and think nothing of it if he deems it necessary. He kills in anger. He kills enemy gang members just for fun. And he can read the writing on the wall, when others can't even see it. Sadie because she can get places that men can't. She can come across in the beginning as the demure little housewife, but the moment you let your guard down around her, you're going to end up as female as she is. You won't even know she cut your dick and balls off until after she shot you and the blood is flying. She won't tolerate belligerence towards those she cares about in the slightest way. When you're around people she loves, your life can literally be on the line, so you better at the very least be civil and cordial.1 point -
This is a fantastic list of options I really like the city building challenges etc, but ideas have got enough to get the mental juices flowing without being overly constricting. My next build is a floating island, I'll be incorporating a few of these ideas into it and the surrounding area. Hopefully some of these end up on the front page of all videos to must see 😛1 point
