Blockbuster passing up on Netflix looks really dumb now, but at the time, it didn’t look that crazy. I think Netflix was still only a mail order rental place, and who thought streaming would displace rental stores that quickly?
I think K-Mart buying Sears was dumb, it was a company on life support and bought another struggling company, and it ended up speeding up the decline of both.

Even before the pandemic, digital distribution was taking over physical sales. It was also never been a secret that the convenience of digital distribution was that you don’t have to leave the house for it, like why else would AAA titles get digital distribution?
I’m not singling anyone in particular out for this, but an observation I’ve seen that’s pretty common, is that people who are really anal over physically collecting for one form of entertainment they care about are okay with digital distribution of a hobby they don’t care about. I’m a big music nerd, and some people here might scoff at this, but I’ve run across a ton of people who complain about people listening to music through streaming and MP3’s, and tell you that physical is the only way, but they’re okay with consuming video games and movies/shows through digital means.
People who consume all their media via physical means are the true rarities out there.

It is slightly annoying when I get something at a good deal, and a few months later the new one comes out. Though most of the time they’re only slightly better.

Your part about the sales of the PS2, PS4, and the Switch are implying that the PS4 and Switch outsold the PS2, which hasn't happened yet, as it's still at the #1 spot of best selling consoles by a decent margin.
Though to the original topic, in a way it is kind of surprising that the PS5 sold that quickly (due to how much of a pain it is to find), but the Gamecube wasn't known for selling that well either.

Some games I bought brand new for like $20-40 new at a place like GameStop or Best Buy and see it listed on PSN for $60 for quite awhile. So I personally find it weird when the digital copy stays at that price for so long, but the physical goes down quicker.

My issues with digital distribution are more on the console side. A lot of this can by “bypassed” on the PC side.
If they remove a game from the store, you’re screwed, you’re not getting it back unless you jailbreak your console.
The physical copies tend to go down in price a lot faster than digital. People gloat about PSN sales and how those prices are why they went digital, yet I’m sitting here owning those same games I got for the same price (or less) on disc a long time ago.
it’s also crazy how I got some games a few years ago for $20 that are still being listed as $60 online.

I always thought it was silly the way people say stuff like “overrated trash”. It feels more inauthentic or try hard than just saying “it’s trash”.
It gives off this feeling like they’re trying to be rebellious and braggadocious.

If you look at my other posts in this thread, I agree with you over the meanings. I'm telling you what most of the internet likes to think it means. It's always used in disdain towards anything popular, or critically acclaimed. They talk about how terrible it is, and add the extra spice of "it's overrated", like it makes it sound like an educated opinion.
If so many people didn't think overrated = bad, I (or others) wouldn't be questioned by people so much when I say "wait, how can you like something that you think is overrated?"

Another reason why it’s interchanged a lot is because a lot of people throw those terms around as a “fancy” way to say something popular/well regarded sucks. Apparently it adds more “oomph” if you say it’s overrated/overhyped than just flat out saying you think something sucks.

”I came here to tell the 12 year old girl that she shouldn’t do this”
”Well we have your chat logs, that’s definitely not what it sounds like”
”No, you’re misunderstanding, I was trying to scare her”
”So why are you carrying a box of condoms?”
    ”cough cough, I’m leaving”

Random encounters in RPG’s. Part of it was my impatience, but playing a lot of those games that were early in having enemies visible on screen made it even more annoying. Especially when some of those games also expected you to grind. I can shut my brain down when I’m grinding in a game with random encounters, but having to leave the screen to reset the enemies over and over is obnoxious for me.

It’s short for baby boomer, someone born in that generation. Since my example was someone’s grandparent (or having older parents) getting hacked for using an outdated computer, I used it correctly.

It’s all opinion. Overrated for me is when I see a game that I think is good or great get perfect scores across the board. It’s like, cool, I enjoyed the game, but not that much.

Overhyped? Yes, absolutely. My definition - if it can be called that as it's not exactly definitive - is that people get so excited about a game that they'll buy it without any sort of critical thinking. "I'll get it anyway" is why so many games are allowed to come out as rushed, as evidently buggy, with as much content missing as they do. We can talk about the industry-wide problems going on behind the curtain, they absolutely exist, but some of that accountability falls on the consumer. Alternatively, overhyped is when the game turns out to be less than its marketing - who'd've thunk it?
As for overrated, that's a term that gets bandied around too much but then that's typical of most games discourse. It's up there with words like janky, P2W and greed. As @Grungie said in that thread, and I quote,
Overrated to me means the game's critical/user rating is too high for what it is. That's it. One can like something as Grungie points out, but think that it's liked too much and sometimes for the wrong reasons. I certainly think Gothic is vastly overrated by its fanbase, but I still like what a lot of it does (even if as said in another thread the game is less than the sum of its parts).
Similarly, underrated is another term that gets tossed hither and yon, usually by people who liked the game a lot. It's rare you'll see someone who dislikes a game and say it's underrated, because even if one dislikes it they can see how others should be able to enjoy it.
Good thread, Clasher. Thanks for bringing up the topic.
