This is where our individual differences and preferences kicks in. I have been bored to death with what EA have been doing with their FIFA games for years. Now comes the concept behind the development of Rocket League. The difference it's got from actual football game is what makes it a continual play game for me.

True. When games do certain settings or genres differently with a more unique concept, they can grab you with the unique take even if you dislike the setting/genre before.

If you ever played simulation games for too long, they always tend to bore you out. It's why I don't spend too much time on them. The DLC was a good escape that adds a little bit of fresh air into the game. It's only Microsoft Flight Simulator that never bored me no matter how much I played it.

I think it also depends on your interests as well, because certain simulators can cater to your specific niche, like a movie-making simulator game for your inner film-buff. I don't consider myself the most passionate gamer ever, but I really enjoyed Game Dev Tycoon and could play it all day long without getting bored, because the feeling of being this game developer going through the different important milestones of video game history was surreal and really interesting. I had a lot of fun simulating the experience of creating notable video games like Half-Life, Halo, and of course, all those 16-bit games on the N64. The mod that stretched out the gameplay by making time move slower really helped because it means that I could create more games from all the different periods of video game history.

I never found it any easier either when I played it. I hope you're making progress?

Actually, I ended up messing up and missing out on getting Black Frost, so I feel like starting all over again on the "Easy" difficulty this time, with a proper walkthrough telling me how not to miss out on all the routes/collectibles I can get.

I had a really tough time just yesterday with a battle where the JSDF soldiers were escaping and I had to stop them while trying to crack the skills, so that was a pain. Stopping them was one thing, but it's so easy to miss out on cracking the skills you want because you need to have the characters you tagged at the beginning of the battle to defeat the enemies with the skills you want; anyone else who defeats those enemies means you've lost the skills. It's frustrating.

I was never really great at strategy games, so it makes sense why I'm having such a tough time. lol I generally avoid RTS and 4x games because of this.

VNs tend to be labeled as "weeb games with naughty anime girls," when nothing could be further from the truth.

well to be honest, this is true to a certain degree though... hehe. 😅 as a lot of VN's have "patched" versions, but of course not all of them. 😁

That's true, and I do agree that a large portion of the VN industry thrives on using such fanservice for profit, but what I meant was that people tend to generalize that all VNs are like that, when there's plenty of solid VN titles that aren't just porn simulators, not to mention certain VN studios which publish VNs that avoid sex scenes altogether like Key (Little Busters, Clannad, Kanon, etc. are all family-friendly). The Higurashi games are suitable for all ages, ironically, considering that the anime adaptations are all filled with blood and gore. Most people's favorite anime like Steins;Gate and Fate/Stay Night came from visual novels too.

I just think it's a shame for people to just dismiss such a great storytelling medium as "hurr durr, cringey nude anime girls go brrr."

i feel like they should atleast contain a lower difficulty setting especially a much hyped game like elden ring, i know purist will scream bloody murder but i'm sure it can only benefit sales in the end. i managed to get my way trough the first darks souls but other then that i never bothered with any of their other games. I just don't have the time anymore to be stuck at a boss for a couple of hours until you finally get lucky to beat it, sure the feeling is great but the cursing and frustration not so much because i play games to relax not to get frustrated. Don't get me wrong i will pick and play elden ring one of these days just not for full price because i'm not sure i have it in me anymore to experience 60+hours of constant frustration.

Yeah, reading these posts kinda make me change my mind about it. Imagine putting so many hours into the game, only to find that the game proved too difficult for your preference, and you can't change the difficulty so you're stuck between abandoning the game, wasting $60, or forcing yourself through 60+ more hours of frustration.

That's also why I like games that allow you to change difficulty mid-game too, instead of realizing how difficult "Normal" is down the line and not wanting to restart all over again (looking at you, Devil Survivor: Overclocked).

if you like Shin Megami Tensei games i'm sure you feel right at home here as many of us do.

Sounds great. 😄 I am enjoying the SMT games so far, so I'm glad to see more fans around.

Just promise you'll keep some time left over to post on vgr because Smt games can be quite the time sinkers.

No kidding. Devil Survivor in particular is consuming the most of my time so far with its annoyingly tricky victory conditions. I can't even rely on the typical Atlus paid DLCs to boost my level up for an easier game because there is none for DeSu. It reached a point where I just feel like giving up on cracking the skills during battles and just get it over with by defeating the enemies ASAP, regardless of whether I've succeeded in cracking the skills.

Welcome to VGR! We're glad you found us! Looking forward to seeing you around the forum.

Thanks. Looking forward to seeing you too. 🙂

  7. Yeah, platformers are a big-turn off for me, but only because I suck at them. lol Their worlds look colorful and fun, but their gameplay mechanic is so annoying and requires good hand-eye coordination.

Other genres that I dislike include:

    • RTS
    • FPS
    • 4x games
    • Roguelike
    • Puzzles

Basically anything that requires me to strategize and use more braincells than I usually do normally. I play games to relax and have fun, and unfortunately, I don't find challenging games relaxing or fun.

First-Person Shooters can be appealing for me if it's not a generic military shooter, which most FPS are. Doom (2016), for example, was quite fun... until I got tired of dying repetitively and gave up midway. BioShock is another fun one that had an interesting and unique setting that wasn't just "soldier fighting war/enemies."

My favorite genre is adventure, as in story-focused games like Telltale games or Quantic Dream games, especially Detroit: Become Human. RPGs can sometimes be my second favorite genre, as long as it's not some medieval fantasy, which most RPGs are, unfortunately. ARPGs are more my style, like The Outer Worlds and the Mass Effect trilogy.

  8. I've already pre-ordered this on the PS5 because it contained a bonus quest available on the platform. Plus, open world magic school; I'd say it's about time. I'm not a big HP fan either (I find the latter half of the movies kinda boring with their YA romance/drama), but just the idea of being able to attend a magic school like Hogwarts kinda draws me in... plus I always found the discussions of "which House do you belong in?" interesting (I was often slotted into Ravenclaw/Hufflepuff), so I'm glad that we can finally get slotted into those Houses for real this time.

  9. Depends on how difficult the game is. I don't generally like challenging games. I know that's an opinion that's frowned upon by most gamers, but my slow reflexes and anxiety attacks means that I can't really handle the stress that difficult games come with. I would just suck at those games and no amount of "git gud" would matter. 😆

But if the difficulty doesn't make me want to punch my monitor, I don't see the problem with it. I usually play my games at the default Normal setting anyway, unless it's a roguelike dungeon crawler meant to punish you or something.

  10. Yeah, I ordered one a year ago and it only came in about a few months ago. Owning a Playstation used to be this fantasy of mine because I was always stuck with the XBox and PC, while interesting games like Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts were all Playstation exclusives in the past. I would remember checking out Kingdom Hearts screenshots in gaming magazines and got all jealous about it.

Unfortunately, by the time I grew up and could afford a Playstation (my first PS console was the PS Vita, and my first non-handheld console was the PS4 with the red Spider-Man skin), Kingdom Hearts was already ported to the PC and didn't feel that special anymore on a Playstation. It really didn't help that the PS5 didn't have a lot of console exclusives to be worth the purchase, but I bought it anyway because there were certain upcoming Playstation titles I wanted to play... namely the cancelled Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake... Sigh. Big L moment. At least there's the upcoming Wolverine game as well as Insomniac's Spider-Man 2. Those Spider-Man games were a big reason I bought the Playstation too because they're still PS-exclusive, and I'm a huge Spider-dork.

Also helps that the PS5 serves as a Blu-ray player as well and I could play not just my Blu-ray movies but also my South Park collection (season 1-20).

  11. I found Happy Home Paradise a lot more unique and interesting than the Animal Crossing: New Horizons base game with its gameplay of opening up schools and facilities for the island, not to mention designing homes for the different villagers. New Horizons just felt boring after a long time of fishing and collecting fruits. I'm glad the DLC shook things up.

    i like the sims games.

I tried to get into them, but I always ended up getting bored after taking care of the Sims' career and family for a few hours. The mundane routine of their mundane lives just didn't really grab me. lol

It's a shame though, because I tried more than a few times to have fun with the games, including Sims 2-4, but all my effort just ended up with boredom.

  13. Medieval settings or even just fantasy settings with castles and dragons tend to turn me off, so I would probably skip any game like that when I see their screenshots on Steam, just quickly moving on to the new Steam recommendation.

I know there's a lot of "adult" games on Steam these days, and such adult content is usually a deal-breaker for me because I don't play games for porn.

Sports-related content like Rocket League is a deal-breaker because I don't even like real sports, but that's going more into game genres rather than game content (platform games is another genre I'll never play).

But aside from those, most controversial content like violence and gore doesn't faze me... they also don't immediately grab me either because virtual violence and depravity alone don't appeal me in a game. I played Postal for about an hour or so and got bored.

  14. Very rarely unless it's for a franchise I love, and I don't generally get interested in a lot of AAA franchises most people love. Generally, I just find it difficult to get into a new franchise I've never known before, so I became a very fussy buyer. The last time I paid for a game before it was even released was for Soul Hackers 2, but only because I've devoted myself to play all SMT games. Before that, it was the Chaos;Head Double Pack on the Switch, which is set to release this October.

Usually, I would only wait for the reviews to come out and decide from the word-of-mouth whether the game is worth playing or not. And even then, I would probably wait up to two years before I find the motivation to buy the game.

  15. Most mobile games I've played were bad, but that's like saying water is wet. On other platforms, there were games where I didn't enjoy myself but they weren't bad games, especially in terms of simulation sandbox games like The Sims or Planet Zoo. I think the ones I could describe as "bad" in recent memory is Shin Megami Tensei V and Soul Hackers (the first one on the 3DS). The story was pretty boring for both games, and I just found them forgettable.

  16. I made an AMV as a kid when they were trending, some fan-made trailers, a few vlogs when I got inspired by RayWilliamJohnson's vlogs back in the late 2000s, but nothing really successful came out of my channel. It was just for fun, and it was just a phase.

  17. Had a couple short films from the YouTube channel "Alter" playing in the background while I was playing Devil Survivor, including:

    • The Last Séance - 6/10
    • Alone Time - 6/10
    • Quarto para Alugar (Room for Rent) - 6/10

They were okay. Alone Time had a nice twist though.
