When are you willing to let a character you like die?

I was heartbroken to lose a beloved team mate in a game yesterday, but when I read what I’d have had to do to keep him alive, I wouldn’t have changed it—the consequences for the game world would have been too heavy.

How far will you go to save a character? What consequence is too much?

I'd do anything to save a beloved character as long as it does not involve the deaths of hapless innocents.

But games rarely give you this choice. The only case I can think of is in Splinter Cell Double Agent, where saving a character is only possible by letting a terrorist attack go through unimpeded.

I'm not sure - I normally just let the character die just to see what'll be the after effects of such a decision. It's not like I don't care about them but my curiosity tends to get the best of me.

The importance of the character's death is what determines whether I'm going to allow his death or save him regardless. If the death is of greater good, then it's a worthy cause.
