Crazycrab got a reaction from kingpotato in Games you hate that everbody else loves!
I noticed that @DylanC posted a topic "Games you love that no-one else likes" (LINK).  But as far as I can tell, there was no thread for the opposite.  Since every Ying needs a Yang I decided to start it myself.

So here it is, a thread to bash the games that everyone seems to love that you can't stand.  That particular game gets a bunch of praise from your fellow gamers and/or a ton of awards from critics and you can't figure out why.  The games or genres that your friends are all playing that you can't get into. Maybe even an upcoming release that has everyone hyped, but your not interested and your sick of hearing about it!

I'll start with a selection of mine:

    Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor

As a fan of open-world action games like Assassins Creed and as well as Lord of the Rings, this is a game that should have been right up my ally and seemed to please everyone else but I was VERY disappointed.  What I expected from the trailers was a game where you where a lone Gonorian Ranger that would have to use stealth and strategy to combat the hordes of Orcs in Mordor. The game in truth is more like... actually no... EXACTLY like this!

You were so ridiculously overpowered and the stealth detection was so hilariously broken that the only aspect that is any legitimate threat to you is you own lapsing concentration!  You can sprint straight across open fields and through crowds still get stealth kills, be surrounded by and slaying dozens of enemies that will barley score any hits, they will lose track of you after breaking the line of sight for only a few of seconds and even if you do manage to die it doesn’t even matter since you are resurrected with the enemy Orcs raising level which you'll likely be welcoming.  Then there's the story and characters which are even worse, their so bland and that an hour after playing I couldn’t even remember anything that happened except for the truly atrocious ending.  How the fuck did this get an 8.0 user score on metacrtic?

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

There is a lot of positive things to say about this game from it's visual and sound design, combat, brilliant AI, the fun puzzles and very well designed levels.  But, it is also one of the most frustrating gaming experiences I have ever had in my entire life. For everything that is great, there is something else needlessly tedious or hair-pullingly annoying.  Not to mention I blew about £300 on it, a Switch and accessories in order to play it!  The most consistent complaint I hear is the breakable weapons and that is irritating but for me, the biggest was the sheer size and design of the map. It makes the simple process of going from A to B a total pain in the ass. Mounts are useless since there is a deep chasm, sheer cliff or a group of enemies a 10-second gallop in every direction forcing you to abandon it and when you do they don't back to their stables!  I spent about 12 hours playing about 90% of which was on shrines and towers because the game didn't push me to do anything expect unlock more fast travel points and expand my stamina and health gauges. I'm sure with a lot of time there is an amazing game here but I didn't have the patience to find it.

    Burnout Paradise

I was once a Burnout mega-fan and consider Burnout 3: Takedown one of the best racing games of all time if not THE best.  So I was deeply saddened that the fifth (and as of now, last) main installment of the Burnout franchise replaced classic arcade racing with one very stupid idea which inexplicably stuck...  MAKE IT OPEN WORLD! This was a move that I'm convinced to this day was done for no other reason than EA's sheer unfettered greed, forcing players to buy their own copy of the game in order to play together.  Split-screen and Crash party... GONE!  Instead, you drive across what's effectively an open-world menu completely wasting your time whenever you need to change your vehicle or start an event.  Most consider Paradise a classic and will never be able to understand why.

Well that's my contribution to pissing everyone off, how about you!

no violent video games do not cause violence. bad parenting and mental issues and society not looking after people who need help  causes violence. people just want a scapegoat so they say games did it

I think I’m a prime example of video games not causing violence, being that I’m a clinically diagnosed sociopath. I play some of the most depraved, gruesome games imaginable. And I derive pleasure from picturing people in more pain and suffering than most can fathom. But never once have I acted on it. The game Hatred doesn’t give me the thoughts that I should try it just for whatever reason. I don’t care enough about people to waste the time and energy on them. All the planning and time it would take to set up a location to do it isn’t something I care to waste time on either. I can do it in game, and dream it up even worse in my mind, and I’m satisfied. It takes little energy and I get to experience what I want. The only time I would express any of these desires is if someone broke into my house. I’ve gone on record with the cops that anyone breaking in will not leave alive. It is my 100% intention to kill them. And I will succeed in ending a human life.
Did video games have anything to do with any of this? Not a god damn thing. Actually the opposite. They actually STOP ME from acting on my desires. The violence I get to experience in game keeps me in check. So I can straight up tell you that violent games can actually be a good thing.

Thank you. “Strong grasp on reality.” That is exactly the matter in question here.
If a video game really did “influence” a given person to commit a violent act, what that draws into question is the person’s psychology. That person must have a difficult time identifying the difference between the fantasy world in the game (where there are no real consequences) and the real world (where there are real consequences).
Such a person is likely either 1-young and developing, and just needs more time and parental guidance, or 2-is an adult and requires psychological help from a professional so that they can learn the difference between fantasy and reality. It is this psychosis in their brain that ultimately produced their actions.
Video games do not feature actual violence. They feature simulated violence. No harm is done on any entity. When you riddle your pixelated opponent with bullets, nobody hurts. Nobody bleeds. Nobody dies. Nobody’s will is violated. There is literally no commonality there with an actual act of violence which entails pain, harm, loss of function, death, etc. for an actual person.
An actual violent video game would be one where if you push a button, a real living being on the other end would experience some kind of suffering. This thankfully is not something that exists.
For a lot of us, gaming provides a safe psychological outlet where we can broaden our range of experiences without any actual loss of control.
It’s also worth pointing out that there are violent video games that teach lessons in morality. I would say that the BioShock series or The Last of Us are prime examples. Both series send messages of hope, kindness, love, and protection of the innocents.

There is to much comments to quote so I'm just going to recap as much as I can.

@Joshua Farrell sorry dude you kinda poke the beehive on this one xD. Following up on your topic, yeah there is a lot of suggestible people out there, but I dont think that videogames are directly responsible for violence. Regarding your comment about some criminals pointing out that their crimes where inspired or influenced in some way by videogames, well that might be true, but then again a crime can be influenced by anything or anybody if you have the imagination and motivation 😆 criminals will pin their crimes on anything just to avoid guilt. On a lesser example a parent will blame videogames for his kid not doing homework instead of taking the blame for not restricting hours of play and discipline his child. By the way you never directly said that you though that videogames where the cause of violence, you where just asking for an opinion on the topic and I think a lot of people on the forum misunderstood that. And as a fellow member welcome to the forum and I'm glad to see that you are more active here, its a small forum but is good to see it grow.

@Crazycrab I agree with you I'm also sick of people that use videogames as a scapegoat for the reason of violence. For example not to long ago there was a school shooting in Mexico, surprisingly school shootings are rare here even though that the violence is at its peak on the streets. Basically what happened is that a kid killed his teacher and some students, the kid had a white t-shirt with the slogan Natural selection which is an obvious reference to the Columbine High School massacre, the shooters of Columbine had the same t-shirt. The Mexican governor blamed the reason of the shooting on a game called Natural Selection which is a damn unknown alien shooter that has nothing to do with the actual problem, he said the kid was influenced by the game, when he was obviously influenced by another school shooting.

@skyfire I want to start by saying that I appreciate you being part of the forum and I nominated you for the member of the month because you are constantly active and contributing to the forum. With that being said I disagree here with you dude, its not denying, its facts. I've seen some of the studies you mentioned and well they are mostly published by associations that are against videogames so the studies are probably biased. If those studies where true you and me should have been cold blooded killers since we play videogames a lot 😆 Aggressive behavior can be triggered by anything depending on the person, I remember there was once a case where some dude killed his neighbor over a unmowed lawn.

If you are such a hardcore believer that game violence is a direct link to real world violence, then why are you still playing games? Aren't you at a risk of being corrupted by the games you play and going postal on your area?

Wow. I mean wow! It's not like I expected a response that would change my perspective on the matter, but I at least expected one that was mature worded with due respect, but apparently that was asking too much. You can believe whatever scapegoating nonsense that the right wing politicians have forced down your throat all you want, but can you at least conduct yourself like a grown up? Thank you.

Aggressive, debatable at best, violent, not a chance.  Also the "Anti-SJW" angle is a political standpoint that has nothing to do with propagating violence as a result of direct exposure to the media.

Here is one of at least a dozen reports based on ACTUAL studies I can post, this one being from highly respected Oxford University.

For years now politicians have been making these very unwarranted accusations against gaming and gamers to protect themselves and/or organisations that support them against backlash and action that might affect their wallets.  It's not just games either but also music, TV shows, movies and even books.  It's well known amongst the gaming community that is in spite of decades worth of evidence and studies that prove that is a complete it's a complete crock of crap that they, naturally just choose to ignore.

So yeah, when you go onto a gaming forum and one of the first things you do is start a discussion throwing in that very bullshit is a bit like walking in a sports stadium being the only one wearing the rival teams shirt.  Some of us might get a little irritated.

I have an 8yo son who has played AC4 for at least 3 years. In life, he has not killed any ship captains or crew, plundered any ships nor hunted sharks and whales in that time because he has a strong grasp on reality. These criminals who blame video games for their psychotic behaviour are using that as an excuse to reduce their punishment. Many millions, if not billions play games. If we were all driven to kill because of them there would be literally nobody left. Frankly @Joshua Farrell, to believe that video games, or any entertainment media, instigate violence, means you're kinda stupid. Just because you can't play COD without feeling less respect for the sanctity of human life doesn't mean the rest of us are that unstable. Most of us can play these games, live in the fantasy, then when it's over, reconnect with reality and live our normal lives. If you can't, then that's your own VERY SERIOUS problem. Get help.

Oh yeah, because the people most qualified to determine the quality of their mental health and what outside influences shaped their psychological profiles to drive them to commit their crimes are of course... the criminals themselves.

@Crazycrab is exactly right. Video Games have no affect on behavior with the exception of a child throwing a temper tantrum when told to shut the thing off. Gaming in no way makes a person violent. Why is it that people only want to pull this argument out of their ass? What about the games that teach children to be a better person? Don't they have the same place in the arguments against video games? Take This Link For Example. Where the hell is the argument now?
VIDEO GAMES DO NOT, WILL NOT, AND CAN NOT MAKE YOU VIOLENT. THE VIOLENCE WAS THERE PRIOR TO ANY VIDEO GAME.
Ted Bundy, Adolf Hitler, and Jack The Ripper didn't play video games.
