Unexpected Uses Of VR

Recommended Posts

I was having a discussion with @StaceyPowers and @skyfire in another thread where Skyfire said that VR could be used to re-live past trauma but redo the outcome as a form of therapy and we thought it was a very interesting idea. I also remembered one of my friends talking about watching porn using VR a few years back. What other ways could VR be used?

Hardly an "unexpected" use =D

I think it'd be cool if VR could be connected to live webcams in distant locations, and then you could "visit" places around the world in real-time.

That’s one of the worst ideas I’ve ever heard. Reliving trauma over and over is what drives people to suicide. Having to relive things from my past is why I had 17 sprained necks before I was even 20 years old.

The mere idea of making someone relive it through virtual reality is a sick, cruel, inhuman treatment. Lives will end up being lost from this. Innocent and guilty. Would you really deem it a good idea for a rape victim to have to relive everything in not only their mind but their eyes and ears all over again as well? This isn’t helping anyone, except those that get their thrills from watching others in pain.

This is a pretty cool one.

You're looking at this from the wrong angle - It's helping you to confront traumatic events in your life and learning to deal with what happened. In other words, it's a required step to move past the pain ad trauma - to accept what happened and learn from it. It's not something widely practiced in the western world, instead doctors prescribe drugs and other things to keep you in denial which only keeps you from progressing as a person. In life everyone has to go through trials and tribulations and it's how you deal with it will ultimately develop into the person you want to be.

There is a machine named "SatisfyerMen vibration" which pretty much automates the porn+masturbation with VR support. I think the way things are going VR lifestyle is coming out. Though this handles different niche.

I'd love the VR to solve different problem for me. I suffered from fast city life and got harassed with slow village life too. I wish VR can solve this problem for me by adjusting the environment which does not cause this constant switch issue for me. A lot of childhood and the adult life drama can be fixed by keeping people in alternative life which gives them safe space. On that part I am with VR.

Exactly. It's very common for trauma victims to attempt to reenact past traumas in an attempt to "fix" the past outcome. This is a common reason why people roleplay rape scenarios, for example. I don't know how often people actually successfully process trauma this way versus make it worse, but at least if a person used VR to re-enact, 1-they would actually be in full control, and 2-they wouldn't be pulling another person into a messy situation.

I love that idea.

Yeah - I'd think they'd have some kind of therapist there to help guide you through the procedure. It does have its risk which I agree it can backfire but it's at least helping you to come to terms with what happened.

I’m not going to use VR to relive being molested at 10 and sexually assaulted at 36.

Counseling is a better and healthier alternative.

I could see "VR Therapy" working in some circumstances for some people.  Like if you survived a plane crash could use VR to to help overcome the PTS and fear of flying, but not something like...

Well... that, reliving that in VR clearly wouldn't help at all.  Choosing how to deal with emotional trauma is a case by case and person by person, what works for some people will not for everybody.

It's kind of a dual-edge sword because keeping people in that safe space forever doesn't allow you to grow as a person. Every one has to go through their trials in life and learning to overcome this trauma will help you develop as a human being.

As I said, it's a case by case basis but it's an avenue that can be explored.

Definitely.. some of friends from office were discussing one more usage of VR. like say you are 70 year old and can't travel upto the machu pichu, imagine VR could take you there and show you, though we are yet to get into matrix like experience for those things. But it can pretty much replace the travelling experience for those who can't...

VR like this can be a good therapy for those who live in regret or something like that.

I think @StaceyPowers said something like that previously and we do somewhat have something like that in the form of a 360 camera combined with VR software. However, it's in its initial stages so it won't provide with an ultra-realistic/ immersive experience. There's also AR(Augmented Reality) which could be further developed for such a purpose. However, its progress is even worse than VR so don't expect any miracles.

Seriously - some people are really twisted in their heads. Ever since I knew about VR, the thought of using it for porn viewing never crossed my mind till date.
