Resetera was  formed by former neogaf moderators, so I assume they took their values with them. I don't know what neogaf is like right now, my experience with it is from 2014.  So let's just say resetera is 2014 neogaf on steroids. In 2014 neogaf was definitely pro censorship and cancel culture. The topic didn't matter you either towed the official consensus or got cancelled. Like I was. And it wasn't about politics either. as political influences in game development wasn't a common topic back then. It was merely that I was skeptical about a game everyone was hyped up about. It didn't matter that I was proven right when the game came out, I already had my fill with that 'community' at that point.
As I've seen on resetera taking even centrist or moderate left positions gets people banned or at least suspended.

I often lack motivation to play games from my backlog. Whenever I start playing something it is entirely on a whim, no thought goes into it, just that at that moment I found some motivation to start a certain game. It could be for a number of reasons, like a new mod was released that makes the game more appealing, or simply someone mentioned the game somewhere, or most of the time for no reason at all.

Games without commitment. That you can quit at any time without loosing any progress. Best if there is no progression in the game at all. When I had limited time that I needed to waste my goto game was rigs of rods, nowadays I just watch a youtube video roughly the length of time I need to waste.

I don't think you can physically make resetera worse than it already is. I used to be a member on Neogaf, which was resetera's predecessor until the big exodus after the forum admin was revealed to be a perv. And it was the most toxic "community" I've ever seen. And resetera is neogaf on steroids, from what I've seen and heard about the place.

Gaming is the biggest entertainment industry now, so it is logical that they want a foothold in it.
That said I've never heard of this developer or any of their games, I hope they aren't focusing on mobile games.

m76 got a reaction from Reality vs Adventure in How do you define immersion?
I think emotional investment is related to the story and characters, and its possible in non-immersive  games as well.
For me immersion means given the situation and the established lore of the game, things play out in a way that is within the realm of what I consider possible.
And the actions you take in the game give the expected results and consequences. Games where outlandish and wildly unrealistic things happen are not immersive.
Anything that fundamentally defies the rules of reason, logic, and realism, hurt immersion.
My goto example of how you can as a game developer hurt immersion terribly is max payne 3. Where they made every hit you suffer from enemy fire appear as a bullet hole on your character's body. This kills immersion completely. Because a human cannot survive dozens of bullets let alone move like nothing has happened. No, what they should've done instead is not show bullet holes at all. Then I can make believe in my head that the character is so awesome and lucky  that hardly any bullets touch him, thus keeping my immersion intact. But if you are going to show dozens of bulletholes on the character that will kill my immersion in an instant. Hypothetically if you happened to play as a terminator in the game, then the bullet holes would be perfectly fine and increase immersion, not hurt it.

I draw a blank every time I need to name a character. I can't think of a name if my life depended on it. So I usually just end up naming the character something stupid or a name I heard recently.

I often feel disconnected from games, but not for the reason described there. It is kind of a given that you have to choose to do the main objective of the game, otherwise what else is there?
The disconnect I feel is when the game doesn't have a clearly defined narrative to follow and serve as an incentive to continue the struggle. The opposite of which the article seems to be advocating for.
I find the suggestion for games not to have a specific story to tell, but offering many potentialities of stories to be experienced by the player, not just undesirable, but completely infeasible. That would mean the need to make 5 games or 10 games to make just one. The narrative of a game either works for the player and they end up liking it, or it doesn't and they end up not liking it. And that's alright.
As for the disconnect between the game mechanics and the narrative, I always think of that as a technical limitation. Sure it would be great if you could smash all rocks in the game environment and they would stay smashed, but I understand that it is not feasible.  You don't experience games as you do real life, and your inputs and reactions are limited. So there needs to be an established set of mechanics and rules on how the player interacts with the game.  These mechanics need to be clearly defined and should never suddenly change. Just because there are choices in the story, doesn't mean the game mechanics also need to be a'la carte.

m76 got a reaction from killamch89 in When is a playthrough of an open world game “done?”
When the main quest and all significant side quests are finished. I don't care about repetitive quests and other time wasters that don't have a worthwhile narrative attached to them.

Making an exclusivity deal with the epic store sacrificing reach for short term monetary gain, meaning they don't care how many people actually play their game as long as they get paid Sacrificing artistic vision for a lucrative deal Remedy entertainment selling Alan Wake and significantly scaling back the scope and technology behind the game to make it an XBOX360 exclusive Belittling, or  insulting the fans or the gaming community at large for example Adrian Chimleraz, Cliff Blezinsky, and various others. Using games as a political platform, by promoting political groups or ideologies through the game with no context, for example NFS Payback advertising politics in its in game news feed. Distancing themselves from their previous works, suggesting that they were somehow inappropriate or toxic, which implies that the people liking those games are also toxic.

I don't get motion sick from narrow fov but I absolutely hate it, especially in games with tight corridors. In those games I often do Y turns in corners or stairwells so my view is not just a wall.

m76 got a reaction from StaceyPowers in In what ways could open world games be radically redesigned?
I think the biggest problem with open world games, is that they are cardboard cutouts. Nothing is functional, nothing is interactive. They all just go for size, instead of quality. I think anything larger than GTAIV is pointless. Instead of making the world bigger, it should be made interactive, where every building is explorable, and has a function, even if it is not relevant to your quest. I find it immersion breaking that in every open world game only 1 in a hundred buildings can be entered into, and even there the only accessible room is where you have a mission objective. Cities should have working mass transit systems, and every vendor and shop should be real where you can actually buy food or something. I think with ai technology you can easily generate random NPCs with proper spoken lines without having to involve writers or even voice actors.
Current open world games all feel like walking around a movie set instead of a real living breathing environment.

m76 got a reaction from Shagger in Why are "Steam Exclusives" not a controversy?
What is anti-consumer about epic's behavior is that they specifically offer monetary incentives to developers / publishers if they don't sell their games on any other platform.
I'm unaware of steam doing anything similar, but if they did, it would be equally contemptible.  As far as I'm aware steam "exclusives" For indie developers is a matter of convenience and a lack of the ability to distribute their game the traditional way.
Although I wouldn't be surprised if steam started making such deals in reaction to what epic was doing.  But if that is the case they are doing a good job of keeping them quiet.

The best audiologs are in system shock 2, as people are slowly going insane and succumb to the "will of the many"
But artifacts and ruins are great too. Like in Tomb Raider.

A character can be idealized and realistic at the same time. Idealized as in better looking than average.

Why would they need to get bigger? I've had 10 times more fun in GTA3 and Vice City than in GTAV, despite the map being only a fraction of the size. What you ask for is not feasible, and not even necessary. And the exact mentality while we get big but pointless open world games devoid of meaningful content.
As for being able to destroy cities, see Mercenaries 2: World in Flames. You can literally level everything in that game, and it's one of the most underrated open world games I've seen.

I'm pretty sure nobody here has played Revenge on School, since it was only ever available in my native language. It's a text adventure game from 1994, it is full of gratuitous violence and it's so absurd and grotesque that it's actually hilarious. There was only one thing certain: that every computer at school had a  copy of it somewhere hidden away in a folder.

Any and all games, that have no solo play option. I can't be bothered to play with random weirdos from around the world (no offence) I want the game world to be all mine, with nobody breaking my immersion at every corner.

For example in GTAV 90% of the map you drive through once and that's it. Yet how many thousands of hours go into designing those parts? Only for the player to pass through it once on their way to a poi. What makes exploring fun is interesting POIs with intriguing lore and artifacts, or actually unique loot items. But since loot now comes from lootboxes and paid transactions, exploration has lost one of its biggest draws.
