Even tough a gimmick It was interesting at the time and from what i remember the best game that utilized the 3d tv effect was gran turismo 5 but you know after 2 hours people including myself would get a bit dizzy and most likely never used the 3d effect on their tv's again.
Same with the 3ds i tought it was exellent at the time but after a couple of hours, you would just turn the 3d off.
Scott The Woz did an exellent video on 3D gaming :

Pretty much the usual suspects, i probably woulden't have put ubisoft so high on the list and maybe leave out cd project red and replace them with rockstar but that is just me. Maybe 2k games should have been included aswell.
You know let's play the advocate of the devil and say i loved Ea when i was a kid up until maybe the launch of ps4/xbox one that is were they lost it completly imo. A lot of their early games on the sega megadrive/genesis made me the gamer i am today, when you saw that electronic arts logo on a box you knew you were getting quality their box art and cartidges were also different then regulair mega drive carts so that may have been a reason too. Many of their early sega games i still have found memories of, the road rash series, the strike series, james pond trilogy, populous, lotus games and theme park just to name a few. They were also one of the first big publishers to start releasing console games aimed towards a more older audience, maybe this is a bold statement but if it wasen't for ea the sega genesis/megadrive would have never been close saleswise to the super nintendo.
If we speak from a business standpoint, you gotta give it to Ea that they pretty much have a monopoly on sports games these days. While that isen't a good thing by any means it's a bloody brilliant move business wise. Take their recent example of taking over Codemasters, with aquiring them they pretty much have a monopoly on third party racing games, i've read somewhere they also aquired the Wrc license along the way so they are going to be pretty the only company putting out rally games over the next few years. Sucks but what are you going to do about it.
Is Ea to blame  for this yes and no, i think we should also point a finger towards greedy ass organisations like fifa, nfl, fia and nhl who want more and more money, where it is to the point it's impossible for smaller publishers to aquire the license. I think as fans of a certain sport it sucks that their are no other options avaible anymore and when you pretty much have a monopoly on a sport or genre, a company tends to get lazy because again what alternative do you have none, and those suckers are going to buy it anyway.
I think an even better example that is not from ea are the wwe games by 2k, in the past you knew they were good wrestling titles but now i see them getting worse and worse each year. You do have a great alternative by getting Fire pro wrestling imo the best wrestling game ever made but sadly that game is too niche to even make a stand against a wwe game.
Don't get me wrong i don't hate or like Ea, i rather see them as the company that gave me great gaming experiences when growing up rather then the company they have turned into these days. Aslong as people keep buying their yearly shit i'm afraid not much is going to change, sure they get a lot of shit for their practices but in the end all they care about how much profit have we made and you know can't blame them for it because that is the main objective of any company -> making a profit.
Yeah sorry kind off went overboard a bit, there is more i want or should add but i don't want to waste anybody their time even more.

I have to say that there is something very important to note with the animus storyline that has evolved into something pretty great in the latest games, even though they do show less of it. I agree the whole animus was a little confusing in past AC games, which I think most of the hate comes from. But through the whole series, that present day story with the animus is the backbone of everything. And you really don't get how meaningful it really is until you break away from the past series into a more mythical series. I'll explain best I can w/o spoilers. Most of the early Creed series is around Renaissance Italy (1400-1500's) then later events in 1700-1800's. The latest games take place from 400's BCE - 800's CE. So what is that significance? During the earlier time was the age of polytheism and later centuries was monotheism. So the animus story and ISU really adds a lot of brilliance to the plot when taking in the consideration of Gods, ISU, and modern technology. Origins wouldn't be the same w/o it; Odyssey wouldn't be the same w/o it, and Valhalla wouldn't be the same w/o it. I think that those that don't like the animus in older AC games have justification for not liking it, but need a re-evaluation in the newer games to understand its importance. How they link it all up is amazing and mind blowing.

My pick is twisted metal. Does anybody remember that movie that came out some time ago Death race? Specifically the remake with Jason Statham, I was very young back then and I was under the impresion that the movie was based of twisted metal, I didnt knew anything about the original movie.
But with that in mind it will be cool if we get a twisted metal game with the premise of the movie, a post apocalyptic world , a prision based tourment, and power ups on the track like on Mario Kart but of course with all the gore and destruccion of twisted metal

Aliens, I mean obviusly there are other life forms in this universe besides earth, but I was always skeptical when it comes to "third kind encounters" for example last week some people saw some lights on the sky during late hours in the night, so everybody was about it, But this happened on a beach near SanDiego and around that same area there are some US military and Navy bases and also a spaceX station so they are usually doing some type of exercise or rocket experiments, so basically there is a possible logical explanation about it. So back to my point, I was arguing with my wife about this because she is a firm believer that aliens walk among us,  so we started to watch some youtube documentaries about the Drake equation (The Drake Equation is used to estimate the number of communicating civilizations in our galaxy, or more simply put, the odds of finding intelligent life in the Milky Way.) what made me change my mind is that they mentioned the Dark Forest theory, according to the Drake equation there should be about 20 civilizations in our cosmic neighborhood, according to the Dark Forest theory the universe is a huge dark forest filled with "hunters"( in this context inteligent civilizations)and they already know the existence of one another. They are both advanced enough to destroy the other, The hunter has to be careful, because everywhere in the forest are stealthy hunters like him. If he finds another life form chances are they will try to eliminate each other. Basically we already know the existance of other life forms but we dont contact them and they dont contact us because we may end up destroying each other. Sorry for the long post...

You know another thing i changed my mind on recently is something gaming related as i never overly cared too much for the free to play model because it diden't concern me in the slightest and why should i be bothered about something i could care less about but that was before i have to sort off be a "father" figure for a 10 year old boy who is addicted to fortnite. It's due to @Shagger, @Crazycrab and @kingpotato exellent arguments i started caring and looking more and more into the whole free to play model and must say it's worse then the devil, especially for children who are vunerable for these type of practices, anyway everithing is already explained in detail and all there is to say has been said in this thread  so no need to bring it up here.

Yaramaki reacted to Shagger in Why do you play video games?
I disagree. To be clear I'm going into this post on the assumption we're talking about single player games of fiction, or at least thier single player story modes.

All works of fiction are creative works. In many, if not most, of them there are obvious distinctions between those creative works along with the imaginary world they are set in and the real world we all share in our day-to-day lives in. Sometimes these distinctions are obvious, sometimes they are more subtle, it depends on the work in question.

However, there is one thing that doesn't change, that we react to them (or at least when it works we do). How each Individual reacts to them will change from person to person, but the fiction can't just tell us and decide how we're supposed to feel. The writing influences and even provokes it, yes, but does not create it on it's own. That's all down to how the work taps into our own emotions and that can only established by one thing, our real world experiences.

I could tell you a story about how the High Priest of Zarg acquired the Honglof from the Vindings and the impact that has on the Alliance of the Hyless and the Kark and it would mean obviously nothing to you. What's missing is context, and context is something that can't just be described, it's need relevancy. It needs to tap into how you, as a real person, feels. And those feeling can only be shaped but your own experiences in the real world. No good work of fiction will just tell that you're supposed to feel "this" about how the High Priest of Zarg acquired the Honglof from the Vindings and the impact that has on the Alliance of the Hyless and the Kark, it needs to reflect something in your reality to make feel the story than just be told it. Sometimes it's blatant, sometimes it's really subtle or something in between, but all (good) works of fiction reflect reality, that's how they have impact.

    That's why it really annoys me when people say to "Keep "insert real wold social/political issue" out of games/movies/TV" because those people either;

Simply don't understand that's how fiction works. Don't like to see those issues reflected within "thier" fiction because don't like to be reminded of those issues in reality. Or most likely both.
Just thinking of any old example, there were scores of people who hated on TLOU Part 2 because of the pro LGBTQ+ themes in the game. They always said it was "forced pollical correctness"  or a "left wing agenda" or something when the truth was quite simply they didn't like those issues being reflected in thier fiction because they didn't like them being reflected in thier reality. It is literally the only reason one would have problem with it. I mean if one didn't have a problem with the LGBTQ+ people in the real world, why would it be a problem in something as arbitrary and unimportant as a video game? They may have been to stupid to realize it, but they were homophobes, simple as that.

Gaming is a form of escapism and that is it's appeal, I understand that, I truly understand that, but if a game's story doesn't make you care, then it's failed. And it is not going to make you care until it taps into your real emotions and experiences that only only your life in the real world can create.

Nintendo does it all the time when they sucked the wii u dry of it's exclusives and nobody seemed to mind that and nintendo knows damn well they can get away with it because nintendo fans happily open their wallets and pay full price again.
I personally don't mind it aslong it's priced accordingly and it has all the dlc incluced on the disc but even then i'll probably hold off until it goes on sale.

I don't think learning a new language is that hard but most of the time you have to have a real interest in it and really want to learn the language,i know it's not always easy when you're an adult to make time for it on a daily basis.
You know what really helps when there are people around you that speak the language you're learning as that is a massive help aswell, they can correct whenever you speak it badly or not correctly. Like i said if you want to learn spanish a big help is to play your games in english with spanish subtitles, once you've mastered it a bit, Start playing a game in spanish with english subtitles.

Yaramaki got a reaction from DC in What (real) cities would be coolest settings for open world games?
There's a couple i can think of that would be great :
Amsterdam would be a cool one for a change, a city with so many lore and history, needless to say it's quite a beautiful city that would probably work best if it's set into the years 1588-1672 during the Dutch golden age.
The entire Nagano Prefecture in japan would also be a good one for a racing game, narrow mountain passes for touge racing combined with beautiful nature and ancient japanese architecture for a relaxing experience, you could do a lot worse as a setting for a forza horizon game.
If we think outside the box the Nagano Prefecture would be an awesome place for just about any open world game, why not a farming game with exploration and management elements. A life simulator where you are on vacation and can do various activities and go explore the area with the moto the days are yours go do something fun and relaxing something ala the Boku no Natsuyasumi series.

I had to google what the "less than the sum of it's parts" means and i'm still not 100% sure what it means exactly but i'll try to do my best to cover a few games combined over a couple of posts. I apologize in advance that It may not be as in depth or as good as @Withywarlock posts but the least i can do is help out and keep this thread alive. Let's start with an obvious choice :
    Mafia III ( Hangar 13/2k games 2016 )
Mafia series has always been a favourite of mine, albeit the first 2 games are mosly linear in an open world city as there is little to no exploration possible in both games. The strength in both games were always the story, fun and varied missions, great likeable characters you know the sorta things you expect from a mafia game.
Mafia 3 takes another route by going full blown open world because that is what all the games tend to to these days but boy in my humble oppinion New bordeaux is still one of the best open worlds to mess around with it, it's bursting with life, different communities in different disctricts, the 60 ies atmosphere shines trough and trough and you really feel like you are into late 60 ies.
The story is top notch and has great production value, if you haven't played it i'm not going into details about the story, but's all about revenge and you're pretty much a man army kinda like a 60 ies John rambo. There are some really likeable characters like Donovan and that priest who's name eludes me sadly just to name a few. However the main character Lincoln Clay is as boring and generic as possibly can be, this is the first thing of critique that stands in the way of the game being a modern classic as you never feel really connected to the main character.
Musicwise you'll get greeted by jimmy hendrix on the title screen so you just know it coulden't get any better then this. Killing dudes on the tunes of Creedence clearwater revival, the animals or even the rolling stones it never gets old. Just look at the sountrack and judge for yourself.
Let's talk about the exellent combat it's brutal and there is a real sense of satisfaction when you kill everybody the stealth way with a rambo-esque knife, the gameplay is top notch, pretty much your cover/shoot affair nothing wrong with that. Guns handle well and each feel unique to handle. The cars feel heavy they way it should be and the handling is one of the better i've seen in open world games. There are some of greatest collectibles i've seen in any video game like album covers, playboy centerfolds, hot rod magazine you know items you would go out of your way to get.
Now here is where "are less than the sum of it's parts" is in place. The whole premise of the game is to take over new bordeaux district by district, things you have done a million times already in ubisoft games. Not only that but the missions are repetitive and are just plain boring after a while and you just force yourself to continue playing because of the great story. You go on all this effort to make 90% of the game a potential modern classic just to was it all with these boring activities and missions why oh why hangar 13.
I haven't played any of the mafia III dlc so this is just the base game i'm talking about. Also it's been a while like 5+ years since i played the game so apoligies if i forgot to cover anything in particulair, since this was the first title that came to my mind, figured i'd give it a go.
