I'm sure it will be here one day. Those will be the days when the only way to even SEE a PS5 will be in a museum. Kids will wonder how anyone could torture themselves with such primitive technology. Such shitty graphics, and SLOOOOOOOOOW gameplay. They will be wondering how people could bear living in such a primitive, caveman like time.

Following up on this topic about the future of VR, do you think we’ll ever have a true, full-immersion VR experience that incorporates all of the senses, like the holodeck in Star Trek? I’ve seen websites for a few companies in the past that were trying to create holodeck-like VR experiences (i.e. you show up at their facilities, put on a headset, and they provide the rest of the effects in your RL surroundings). What do you all think of this concept?

kingpotato reacted to Crazycrab in The next gen race is now officially on...
As the title suggests (or at least of the time of produce) the race for 9th gen supremacy has officially began with not only the official announcement of the next Microsoft Console, the XBox Series X but with the announcement of it's first game from it's acquired first party studio Ninja Theory.  It is a sequel to it's critically acclaimed Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice (which I love),  Senua's Saga: Hellblade 2.

Microsoft have officially fired the first shot, and it's got to be said from a fan of single player, story driven games like me... It's a 50 calibre.

Your move Sony...... I can't wait!

And right way I've got issues. First, the name, it's dangerously close to XBox One X. There's a very real possibility that someone can accidentally buy the wrong console. Maybe I'm overacting, but I actually thought Scarlett was better.

Second, it looks like something one would mallet into the ground to build a fence.

But then there was this, in full game rendered footage, and I find myself falling in love...

Haven't seen much talk of features yet, and Microsoft hasn’t addressed reports of the company’s plans for two next-gen consoles, but the Xbox “Series” X naming does suggest there won’t be just a single console. We understand Microsoft is planning two new consoles for Series X, with a second lower priced and less powerful console planned alongside the more powerful main console.

For nerds, the Xbox Series X will include a custom-designed CPU based on AMD’s Zen 2 and Radeon RDNA architecture. Microsoft is also using an NVMe SSD on Xbox Series X, which promises to boost load times. Xbox Series X will also support 8K gaming, frame rates of up to 120 fps in games, ray tracing, and variable refresh rate support.

In that case for FPS Borderlands is a good option, as well as Far Cry anything from the 3rd game an up, and GTAV

The Borderlands Series comes to mind, great looter shooters with a tons of weapon types and great comedy.  There also the Far Cry series and although more of an RPG than an FPS I'd also consider Fallout 3, 4 and New Vegas.

This pretty much reflects my thoughts. I'm a multi-plat gamer and hold no sense of brand loyalty, but the PS4 killed it with its exclusive games and Sony knows and wants to keep that going. Microsoft I think have also learned from that and thus have put a lot of investment in new studios and stuff over the last couple of years and that I think the next Xbox will have some superb games, just not right away.

I will probably go for the PS5 just because of the exclusives, but I will wait until TES6 comes out.

kingpotato reacted to The Blackangel in What made you buy your console of choice?
I was a Colecovision kid when I was young. It was cheaper than Atari. Granted it was owned by Atari, and was pretty much the same system, but still. I remember the NES coming out in '85. It was the peak of gaming and the graphics and abilities the system had were mind blowing. So I wanted one. I got it a couple years late and played it like hell. Then the SNES came out. I saved up every penny I could get my hands on for over a year to buy one. You can see where this is going. With the exception of Game Cube and Wii, I have always been a Nintendo fan. The only systems I have never owned that they have put out since NES are Virtual Boy and Wii U. I've had every version of GameBoy. So since I grew up with Nintendo that's where most of my loyalty sticks. PS1 and PS3 have great games, and I play them a lot. But for me the top of gaming will always be Nintendo.

Just read that @The Blackangel recently bought an Xbox One after avoiding Xbox for a very long time after spotting a great deal at GameStop.
It got me wondering what motivated everyone here to buy the consoles you own.
For the longest time, I was a PC-only gamer, until I managed to buy my current PS3 off of my neighbour for cheap after borrowing it for a year or so.
Between PlayStation and Xbox, I was always leaning toward PlayStation, simply because I am not a big fan of Microsoft. I do feel like Sony is really backwards with a lot of its policies and attitudes though, so both options leave a lot to be desired. I will buy the PS5 and not the Scarlett though, because of Sony’s exclusives.
What about you? What made you choose the console you have today?

This is the most embarrassing I've ever done as a gamer.  It's going to take a bit of explaining so bear with me.

This incident concerns Final Fantasy X.  For the sake of anyone who has never played this game before I need to explain for context.  Each character has a unique ability called an overdrive.  For most character's it's a powerful attack but in the case of Rikku it allows the player to combine items for various effects.

On one particular playthrough I wanted to charge Rikku's overdrive for a high level battle.  However, the only overdrive mode she had available was the default "Stoic" mode, so the overdrive gauge only goes up when the character takes hits and it's VERY slow.  So I went to a low level area where the enemies where levelled just high enough for damage to register so I could charge Rikku's overdrive. It was taking forever so I cast slow on my own party and haste on the enemy so they would get more turns and charge Rikku's overdrive faster......  If you are familiar with this game you can probably see where this is going and currently facepalming right now!

Instead of getting more turns, they got ALL the turns and I had no choice but to sit there red faced for half an hour as these low level fiends very, very, very slowly annihilated my end game level party!  I have never felt such an idiot in my entire life!

    Well, here it is.

In my as always humble opinion, it wasn't brilliant. Nice to see confirmation of Resident Evil 3 Remake and more info on Kingdom Hearts 3 Re:Mind was gonna please fans, but that Ghost Of Tsushima trailer was a trailer for a trailer and most of the other games were duds or have very limited appeal, like Superliminal and Dreams as well as Paper Beast as a game that's already strange, but also VR. This opened with Untitled Goose Game... the perfect start and a great omen.

Onto my thoughts on the other stuff. Predator: Hunting Grounds will be Evolve and Friday the 13nth all over again, except I do see it being a pay-to-win, microtransaction laden leech. They're already doing "pre-order to win", so the intentions for this are very clear to me already. Spellbreak has potential, but a battle royal game trying to appeal to RPG fans? I'm sue about that. I do want to be wrong because it does look cool. It's totally right for PlayStation to celebrate 25 years and that message from Ken Kutaragi was sweet, if a bit short, so I'm not going to grudge that part, but let's be honest, it wasn't very useful.

    However, there was one shining star. The very appealing partnership of Square Enix and Platinum Games came out swinging with this;

This looks amazing. This is probably still to early in development to draw any real conclusions and the release is probably a long way off, but this looks incredible. Getting some very nice Devil May Cry vibes. This, for me, was definitely the highlight.

So what are you taking away from the State of Play. Anything you're looking forward to?

Shovel Knight on PS4. It has the same 16 bit graphic style as what you would see on SNES. I think Links Awakening on Switch can fit this topic. It came out a lifetime ago, but they decided to tweak it and update the graphics and now we have an amazingly crisp version to play. A lot of the remasters should come into play here too.

kingpotato reacted to Shagger in Play as Jesus. No joke.
Developer SimulaM, creator of classics such as Car Mechanic Simulator 2018, has announced a new game where you play as Jesus. Doing his Jesusy stuff...

Now, before we dismiss this, just think about it.

Video games are created as an entertainment media made to empower the player. Whether it be lifting the Champions League in FIFA, or slaying the mighty dragon in Skyrim, all good games exist to make the player feel lke they are more than what they are and believe they can be. Playing as Jesus? Playing literally as God? Performing miracles and creating an influence so important that it would become foundation of modern civilization itself? That has got to be the most empowering concept ever! A game with potential as limitless as the power of the great deities! And... log it all as Polaroids in your journal... just like Jesus did... potential!

    ...or maybe...

    ...just maybe...

    ...this game is fucking stupid.
