What’s the funniest actual name you’ve heard of someone having?
Shagger replied to killamch89's topic in General Chat
I actually have a very similar story. I work at a dockyard that refits and now builds ships for the Royal Navy, among other things. Fairly Recently, we assembled the Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carrier. As a way to honour the hard work of the people who built them, each individual had his or her name etched onto one of the hanger doors. We were all obviously invited up to a little ceremony to commemorate this. We couldn't actually look at the engraving as the doors weren't complete at the time, but the full list of names were up on a large billboard displayed on the hander. And yes, you guessed it, there was a Richard Head. I can't believe I live in a world with two pairs of idiots who would do this to their child exist. So now, Dick Head is etched permanently on the Royal Navy's flagship. -
I get why people were mad at him. Knowing that he was such a big donator to republican politicians and policy as well as holding stereotypical "Christian" views on certain things makes me relived that I never bought 5NAF, and I never will. He says he supports equal rights for woman, yet he thinks he has the right to tell woman you can't have an abortion, what they are and are not allowed to do with thier own bodies. He says he doesn't discriminate based on gender, gender identity or sexual orientation, yet financially supports politicians that are trying to put into law more anti-LGBTQAI+ bills and polices than any government in the US has every seen. He's a liar. The kind of liar that's lying to themselves. I do admire him for sticking to his beliefs and refusing to apologise for them, but I don't think he fully understands the harm the causes he supports actually does to people, and I don't think he want's to understand. I don't like him. However, does he deserve to be "cancelled"? No. He has his views and every right to them whether you like them. People can disagree with him, question him or even call him out, but he does not deserve to be threatened, especially his family. Being attacked and doxed is something he wholeheartedly does NOT deserve it. That is way worse is way worse that anything he has ever done. That is out of order and that kind of behaviour should be condemned by everyone. For full context, here is his "retiring" post on Reddit And a summery of the whole story from Gamesindustry.biz

I pretty much agree. E3 was ment to give journalists a chance to see, and possibly try, new games to then report about them to fans through the publication they worked for, whether it be a magazine, newspaper, website or whatever. When they first started to let the public in it became that much more difficult for journalists to see everything they needed to see. To to fix the problem they themselves created, E3 started hosting presentation style conferences so everyone could see new announcements and trailers all at once. This turned E3 into more of a con' (Like Comicon), something the games industry didn't really need as such a thing already existed. The final nail in the coffin came when, again E3 themselves, introduced the idea of live streaming these conferences. After that, it was only a matter of time until game publishers and console manufacturers thought, "Why don't we just stream our own announcements at a time and schedule to suit ourselves?". And, now they are. I know how this is going to sound, but the worst thing E3 ever did for itself was try to connect more directly to the public. That set it on the path towards irrelevancy. Maybe E3's fate wouldn't have been better if it had stayed closed to the public and been for journalists only, it's hard to imagine what would have happened if they did, but either way I actually like things better the way the have turned out. Publishers use the internet as it is now and take charge of thier own announcements. They get better, more direct feedback and it means we don't have go through the hassle and expense to going through 3rd party journalists to get the latest news.

Sadly, we had to expect this. There's no force on heaven or earth that can convince me that the they never intended to bring this to PlayStation or Nintendo when they first started developing the game. This is all a result of Microsoft buying Zenimax Media (Bethesda's parent company) back in March. PlayStation owners have every right to be pissed, but like I said I don't think this is gonna surprise anyone. That aside, the game looks cool, but might not be worth a day 1 purchase given Bethesda's unfortunate, yet earned reputation when it comes to game launches.

As most of you are aware, Cyberpunk 2077 launched (after several delays) on December 10nth 2020, and it was pretty much a disaster. Buggy on PC and almost unplayable on previous generation consoles. Even worse, CDPR tried to hide this by not giving out review codes for consoles and not allowing journalists and content creators to use thier own captured footage for video reviews. The game received such a backlash that both Microsoft and Sony pulled the game from thier digital stores, although the game could still be bought on disc It's been many months, many patches and many apologies, but the game is going back up on the PlayStation store on June 21st, but it's not all good news. Sony have admitted that standard PS4 owners will still have performance issues, but assure that CDPR are still working on it. Full story from Eurogamer. Personally, I don't this the game should be sold untill it's working perfectly, just like how they shouldn't have sold it in the first place. What CDPR did was misguided and dishonest, so I would say this still isn't good enough. What do you think?

What games influenced you as a gamer that you never actually played?
Shagger replied to m76's topic in Gaming Forum
I was I about to ask what the point of this system was when the standard PS2 was backwards compatible, but having watched the vid I kinda get it. The DVR feature and the internal storage are cool and very innovative for the time. It's obviously not all good as the system is apparently unreliable and controller inputs at the back? -
Christian Eriksen Collapses At Euro 2021 And Almost Dies
Shagger replied to killamch89's topic in Sports
I'd never call anyone who goes through something like this as "lucky", but tragically similar things have happened before, like Marc-Vivien Foé, and have usually been fatal. Glad to hear that he's OK -
Locking this thread as the game is no longer available at the prices that have been posted. What are some things that are more fun in video games than real life?
Shagger replied to StaceyPowers's topic in Gaming Forum
Given that video games by their very nature are supposed to be escapism to an empowering fantasy, shouldn't everything be more fun in a video game than in real life? Otherwise it's likely not a very good game. -
First, I have to move this from General Gaming to Music Discussions. Try to post topics in the correct sub-forum. I used to post on the Official Forums for Bloodstock Open Air. I haven't been active on there for years, but I remember the experience being very positive and it still looks busy, I'm actually temped to go back myself. It's obviously not 1990's nor any era specific, but have a look and see the sort of stuff they discuss. I personally don't like forums that are specific to bands, to many elitists fanboy types, that's why I preferred the BOA community. Because it's a forum built around a big, live event, it'll be alive as long as the event is, so it'll be active for years.

I believe them when they said that their user's personal data wasn't jeopardised because, based on the details about what was accessed, it seams unlikely that this was the target of the attack. I don't think source game code and user data would be held of the same, physical data storage. A user would need to access the user data storage through EA's user interface and login systems to make using those processes possible, so by itself it's a security risk buy holding something as valuable as game's source code on the same device(s) or enclosed network. I didn't believe them because I am willing to take thier word, I believed them because that's what actually made sense to me anyway.

Abandonwaregames.net Retro Games, Free Downloads, 100% Legal.
Shagger replied to Shagger's topic in Gaming Forum
True, but the worst case scenario here is a publisher can send a takedown request, abandonware games takes the game in question down, that's the end of the matter. What I meant is that the website is law abiding and perfectly safe and legal for people to use. Abandonware only host games that are not supported, so that's why the companies don't bother and, honestly, unless the copyright holders do still sell the game, legal action against these kind of sites is less likely to hold up in court. If companies as insatiably greedy as EA and as insanely petty as Konami don't come after abandonware, that means the have some understanding of what is and what isn't OK. Obviously, Nintendo take the pettiness well beyond even what Konami could imagine, but we all know what they're like and will be a footnoted as the extreme in this kind of discussion. -
Hardest mission you have ever played in your entire gaming life
Shagger replied to Patrik's topic in Gaming Forum
Discluding anything from games that were just dirt cheap and unfair, momentary difficulty spikes, the hardest level I ever beat was probably Cauldron Epsilon from Horizon Zero Dawn's Frozen Wilds DLC. The first time I attempted it was on Ultra Hard Difficultly, but with decent gear, but it turned out there was a couple of resources I would need a lot more of than I normally carried. The frozen wilds DLC is hard enough, so much more challenging than the main game, but this final level in the DLC's enclosed main story was just everything up to 11. I don't want to go into specific detail because I'll inevitably put out some gameplay spoilers and I would rather someone go into it blind, but I will saw pack as much Chillwater, Blaze and potions as possible with as good gear and modifiers as you can get. -
Abandonwaregames.net Retro Games, Free Downloads, 100% Legal.
Shagger posted a topic in Gaming Forum
I just though I'd take a moment to introduce the VGR community to this fantastic website Abandonware Games. They host ROMs for a large variety of older PC, Console and even Arcade games that are free to download and play. As the name suggests, they only host games that are no longer sold or supported by thier respective publishers, making what they do 100% legal. And these are quality games from big name publishers/developers Like EA, Konami, Capcom and so on. I've picked up Aladdin, Red Alert 2 and Sim City 3000 from Abandonware already, and they do work. Obviously, some of these titles will need emulators to work on modern systems, so be mindful of that before you download any of these ROMs, especially the console games. For example, I used RetroArch with it's inbuilt DosBoxPure plugin to get Aladdin to play. Free free to share what games you have picked up or want to pick up on Abandonware, and most importantly, how you got these games to work on your system to help us all out. Happy retro Indulgences everyone! -
EA says that no players personal info was leaked, and I believe them, so that's a relief. I am a little concerned that some of thier employees info might be vulnerable' like what happened when CDPR was hacked. Those things aside, I offer them no sympathies. EA are the victims and these hackers are criminals, but I don't really care about those facts because of how badly EA treat thier customers and staff, especially at the studios they control, and I hope this hurts.

Must be a region thing. I'll turn on my VPN and try again. EDIT: Yeah, that was it. Quite funny. I really should check out Robot Chicken more often.

Need Some Help Picking a Arcade Console and Game Emulator!!!
Shagger replied to skullchrist's topic in Gaming Forum
I don't have anything against people who buy these kinds of devices, but I personally wouldn't waste my money on them. They tend to be of low quality, are cheaply made, they're designs are meant to fool buyers into think they're buy something from a legitimate manufacturer (Like Nintendo), the emulation aspect is usually very poor, especially in the sound department and the in-built ROMs from retro games are almost always obtained without proper licencing and are, thus, illegal. If I had to have one of those three, I'd probably go for the Pandora controller, that at least can be used as a controller to play legit games, but I'm sure there are better quality alternatives out there if an arcade style fighting game controller is what you want. -
How safe can we be while playing video games at home?
Shagger replied to BabyJ's topic in Gaming Forum
I'm locking this thread and removing the OP's link as this is clearly a bot putting out a rather badly formatted attempt to sell security software (The link text is to a blog produced by the company selling the software, but it hyperlinks to this very thread for some reason). I ask that people not engage with these kind of posts and to report them instead.- 3 replies

It is a good DLC... when it works.

At the most basic level, yes.

The classic forums of artistic expression are probably the easiest examples to use to explain this with. A painting or a statue has no practical purpose, purely creative. There's just vain, opulent, arbitrary things that don't do anything to help anyone. Inanimate objects that only exist to be admired, and nothing more. As soon as something has a use, it becomes something that isn't art. It's now a tool, a device, something that has a purpose beyond it's own vanity. Yes artwork can be (and some might argue needs to be) provocative. Make you think, make you feel, but that's a reaction created only by the admirer, not the object. It's not telling you to feel that way nor convince you of anything. It may have the complete opposite effect on you that the artist intended, and nobody would be able to argue. So you see, a provocation isn't something the work of art in question actually does, that's something you created yourself. Anything you do, say or even feel after admiring a work of art is still something you do on your own. It's artwork itself is still not doing anything. It has no purpose, no function, outside of it's own vanity. That's what something needs to be to be art. That's why I say a video game can't technically be a form of art because it's a challenge, a test of self. Thus, video games have purpose outside of thier own vanity. In that sense, I'd say they're more like a sport. Don't get me wrong though, just because something has a purpose and now can't be art, doesn't mean it can't be built, as least in part, with artistic merit and it can still be admired and be beautiful. Take chess, for example. A game of chess is not an art form, it's a game that tests one's strategic thinking. It's design is built not through pure creativity, but on structure, a set of rules to govern the game. That's not art, that's built to a purpose based on rules, not artistic merit. However, does chess need art to exist? Is their artistic merit in it's design? Well, one look at these chess boards and the answer is obvious; It terms of that design structure built off the rules and parameters of the game, all these chess boards are exactly the same. A game of chess is technically no different played on any of these boards, or even on a bog basic, plastic piece of shit like this. So you see, just because chess is not art, does not diminish how import art is in it's make up. Whilst the game may be technically exactly same no matter what board you play on, the creative element can enhance the experience enormously. Video games are no different. They're basic designs are structured on rules, not creativity, but the aesthetics are there, built of the creative imaginings of whoever it was that created them and can add to the experience enormously. Yes, the creative elements are more important in a video game when compared to a board game because the user interface is entirely dependant of visual design, but that's something that's built to a purpose as well as aesthetics, so it's not entirely a creative endeavour. Not to mention visual aesthetics aren't the only creative elements of a game either, there is also writing and music. So a video game is not art, but it is a test of self challenge that needs good art to reach it's full potential. I hope that clears up any confusion over my point of view.

Warner Bros: "Celebrate Pride... By Repeatedly Beating Up a Gay Character!"
Shagger replied to Shagger's topic in Gaming News
I hear you and there is logic to your statement, but I am willing to give them the benefit of the doubt. It is more likely that this was just a very dumb idea that they just didn't think through. That isn't much better, though, because that would mean that they didn't care enough about the LGBTQIA+ to dedicate the time to carefully put the idea together in the first place. So yeah, another day, another colossal blunder. Welcome to the video game's industry.
