StaceyPowers Posted September 13, 2022 Posted September 13, 2022 What games feature silent protagonists that to you still felt like they had their own distinct identities rather than just being a stand-in for "you" as the gamer? To me, Jack and Delta in the BioShock games felt distinct from me. So did the cat in Stray.
NightmareFarm Posted September 14, 2022 Posted September 14, 2022 DOOM Slayer and Samus in Metroid Dread but that's about it.
Heatman Posted September 15, 2022 Posted September 15, 2022 I was going to mention Jack and Delta in the BioShock games but you have already done the job for me 😊. So, I would say the character of Crono in Chrono Trigger and also The Penitent One in Blasphemous.
Empire Posted September 17, 2022 Posted September 17, 2022 I think it's subtractive. Like it's not natural in a conversation to say nothing and I'd rather the character be developed rather than be 'myself". I prefer dialgo trees or just a narrative then silence.
Akun Posted September 17, 2022 Posted September 17, 2022 A few characters from the SMT games, including the Demi-Fiend from Nocturne and Joker from Persona 5. Helps that the Persona protags had their personality fleshed out further in the anime adaptations. I think Red was the most famous one for being notoriously silent, even during his confrontation with Gold. Just "dot dot dot." Freaking badass.
Heatman Posted September 17, 2022 Posted September 17, 2022 I also find Claude in GTA III to be a great option when it comes to choosing silent protagonist. Even though the graphics of GTA III wasn't that good but with the silent demeanor of Claude, it makes gamers to assume his personality fully.

Doom Slayer is one of the most iconic characters despite saying a bunch of one-liners. His feats in-game especially in Doom 2016 onwards is nothing short of impressive. The original Doom just had some guy shoot demons because he was pissed off someone killed his cat. The more recent games gave him a bit more characterization. NightmareFarm 1

Demon_skeith Posted September 29, 2022 Posted September 29, 2022 I would say Auron from FF X, not completely silent, but quiet enough for him to count.

Joker from persona 5 is a really enigmatic character and doesn't even say anything but you would still pretty much enjoy playing as the character.
Scorpion Posted November 6, 2024 Posted November 6, 2024 I completely agree! Gordon Freeman in Half-Life and Link in The Legend of Zelda both have unique identities that shine through beautifully.
