What Gaming subscriptions do you have and are you satisfied with them?
killamch89 and 3 others reacted to Kane99 for a topic
Does anyone here still subscribe to gaming magazines? I imagine most magazines don't come out physically anymore, but mostly digitally. Does that count towards this topic? I miss the days of gaming magazines when they also offered game discs. Good times!4 points -
Those were the days when magazines came with a demo disk, while the magazines were mostly shit like opm you just got these for the demo disk, good times as a kid and a great way to discover new games and kill a few hours in anticipation whenever your parents would give you a new game. Oh man more simpler times that sadly will never come back. I had a subscription to retrogamer for the longest time but that was until a few years ago because they starting to focus more and more on old mostly british computers then anything else it diden't interest me all that much anymore and since it's coming from the uk it was like 125 euros a year for subscription which was expensive for a magazine that i just tended to flip trough quickly once before throwing on top the pile. I still buy a dutch magazine called power unlimited every month but don't have a subscription for it.3 points

Games where empathy isn’t always easy
killamch89 and 2 others reacted to Empire for a topic
This game is such a product of its time, in world where everyone was bumping out call of Duty’s and making you mow down endless people without batting an eye, this game tricks you beautifuly into playing its game, and you make the same choices as walker and make the same excuses as him too. You don’t even stop to think until someone else has already suffered. I’m glad I experienced this without spoilers all those years ago. And that many people are aware of its genius.3 points -
In what games are NPCs most friendly?
killamch89 and one other reacted to Kane99 for a topic
I think most games have friendly NPCs until you agro them by attacking or shooting them. I'd even say GTA has NPCs who are friendly until you bother them. But if you want something that's more friendly, maybe most kids games, Skyrim is pretty good with the NPCs, and maybe the Sims as well.2 points -

Hi everyone. I was looking for a new community to settle down in and found this place via Google. I enjoy RPGs and adventure games, particularly games where your choices affect the story like Mass Effect and Detroit: Become Human. I got into Shin Megami Tensei games recently and I'm currently playing through Devil Survivor: Overclocked on my New 3DS. Aside from gaming, I also like to binge-watch older TV shows like The Sopranos and The Wire, but I haven't had much time to do that ever since I got into the SMT-binge. Oh well. Feel free to ask me any question so that we can know each other better. 🙂 I hope to see you guys around soon.1 point -

Sony, You Idiots! PS5 Price Increase Announced
Withywarlock reacted to killamch89 for a topic
The only thing saving them is that they have the odd banger like RDR2 and they've hardly supported the game since release. Ubisoft and EA (I'm just temporarily leaving out Activision because they've been bought out by Microsoft so we need to see what they doing going forward) are the only companies I think are possibly worse than Take Two. You're right - sorry about that. We've seen plenty of consoles fail since the 90's - in no way shape or form is the PS5 a failure. It's more overpriced and I totally agree but a failure doesn't sell that many consoles so much so that nearly 3 years later, some of us still can't get our hands on one.1 point -
When it comes to something like gamepass for example. It's cheap and gets you a ton of games at a single price. Not only that it gets you Xbox live as well, at least with ultimate it does. I don't buy games that often these days. That's one other reason I like gamepass, because it allows me to play all of these games I never would have otherwise. And with me, I tend to play a game once. And then never go back to it. That's another reason I like gamepass, because I can pull from a bunch of games, play them, finish them, and then grab the next one. I don't think I would purchase most of the games on game pass either. It saves me a lot in the long run.1 point
-
In some cases they offer WAY better value than paying for games outright. For example, Mass Effect Legendary Edition is £54.99 on Origin, but you can play it via EA Play which grants access to it and a ton of other games on Console and PC for £3.99 a month or £19.99 for a year... It's a no brainer!1 point

Play some Raft for 103 minutes. Got bored. Refunded it on Steam. It's a cool concept, being able to build your home on a raft with lots of customization and island exploration. But man, it reminds me why I dislike survival games. The difficulty curve at the beginning was very steep, especially if you're new to both the game and the genre. It's hard to keep calm and figure out what to do next when the hunger and thirst meters keep you on your toes. Definitely not recommended if you suffer from anxiety issues and panic attacks.1 point

ahhh, now I get it... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Take-Two_Interactive As of March 2018, it is the third-largest publicly traded game company in the Americas and Europe after Activision Blizzard and Electronic Arts, with an estimated market cap of US$13 billion.[3] after all they're 3rd, after EA games. 🤣1 point -
ah yes... fate stay night is also infamous for it's original "eroge" status. 🤣 I'm aware there's family friendly, versions, but man when you discover years down the road abut that "extra" content. 😂 anyway, I can't blame people too much for lumping everything anime = big fat weeb cringe group of people. this is the internet, everything in the open is a cesspool. 🤣 you gotta go find people willing to talk about such stuff, those that don't care, don't, and prefer to have shouting matches over twitter. 😂 and based on psychology everyone has their bias. I like lots of "animation" in general, not just "japanime", but anyway, the internet is full of failure to convice other people about "japanime" anecdotes. just keep calm and soldier on XD1 point

How often do you buy video games the week they release?
killamch89 reacted to runswithspatulas for a topic
as a general rule i try to avoid buying games until i get a good look at the gameplay. every time i make an impulsive buy i end up hating the games. if i've been looking at enough gameplay and have decided i'm fairly interested in the game i will buy it as soon as it hits the eshop.1 point -
I don't understand why people call consoles "too expensive" when they same people say they will play on PC, which is significantly more expensive. And before anyone says it, no, the gaming PC serving as a utility as well as a gaming device argument doesn't work ether as the components you need to make a gaming PC a gaming PC are not necessary in a simple, utility computer, and it's in those comments that all cost for a gaming PC comes from. You can buy a PS5 and a cheap laptop to cover both the utility PC needs and your gaming needs and still have spend less than half what it would cost to build a gaming PC that matches the performance of a PS5. It's not like I'm white knighting here for consoles, I am a PC gamer, but I'm also honest and the PC as a gaming platform is expensive. Can it be worth it? Yes, not to everyone, largely because the install price is so high. It's not like PC games are that cheap compared to consoles now, especially when you consider you can't loan, trade and buy second hand games on PC like you can with consoles. So sorry, @Gonassis, I disagree. The cost of consoles argument doesn't hold weight me when comes from a PC gamer. It's totally get how you might not see a games console as being a worthwhile investment for you because you a gaming PC, that's fair, but there's a difference between cost and value. Value is something judged and gauged by the individual, so the value of something is determined by your own self and nobody can argue with it, but cost a simple, straight up fact. That fact is the PC costs more, it just does. Unless you can show me a PC or PC build that matches the capabilities of a games console for same price, that will remain as a fact.1 point

and here i felt stupid for feeling bad about pick pocketing the AIs in skyrim. lol! i can't do stuff like that phosphorous thing...i'd quit the game and delete it if i had to do that. i don't like killing animals in games. games like fortnite and splatoon the violence is cartoon violence. it's easier for me to accept. i still don't like hurting animals in games. i play minecraft in peaceful/creative mode. a gamer friend of mine plays tomb raider and i can't watch. i mod his stream but i can't watch when he plays that game. certain games just bother me and i won't watch or play them. i've been having some heart problems so i gave up my skyrim and all my shooter games because they cause too much anxiety. i've never really been into violent games but during the pandemic for a while they scratched an itch that needed scratching. i don't know that i'll ever be interested in the survival mode on minecraft. i just like cozy games mostly. the most chaotic game i have right now is my fall guys. lmao!1 point -

Even if it’s early pitch concepts, it doesn’t look too bad. I hope they don’t use the warm colour palette, as SH2 has a very cold and damp feeling with the blues, greens and greys… almost like a corpse. Seeing as Bloober is working with Akira Yamaoka, and it seems like Masahiro Ito is working on another SH game, I hope they’re involved with the rumoured games to a great degree.1 point -

Games that don’t contain a lot of prejudice
DC reacted to runswithspatulas for a topic
ok now i'm confused. if the question is which games offer the least prejudice or bigotry i am sticking to ac new horizons. you can make whatever island you want. if you're part of the lgbtq crowd you can have that kind of island if that's what you want. i had a goth island going. i since restarted to do something else. i'm sure you could do just about anything on acnh u wanted. it's a creative/simulation type game. acnh doesn't really hang on male or female roles or nationalities or even sex. you just go to this deserted island and get yourself 10 villagers and start creating. the villagers go along with whatever because their those AI's and you can interact with them. befriend them and even love them.1 point -

Project 007 & Project Dragon won't drop before March of 2025

Especially if it involves some use of stealth. When I think of 007, I think of someone who does like to take a quiet approach until things go wrong. I could see stealth working well in that world. But my guess it'll be more action based than Hitman is. But I have faith in that team to make a quality game.1 point -
Games that make really intentional use of music
Heatman reacted to Withywarlock for a topic
I love this question, and goes beyond just asking for good music. I can't provide as good answers as others here but I hope they'll suffice all the same. Medievil & Medievil 2: That's not a spelling error, the games were called Medievil. Composer duo Bob & Barn made some terrific tracks for their games, fully understanding the tone the games and levels required. The first game is rather haunting, preferring horror to comedy, and the music does an excellent job of aiding the atmosphere. Meanwhile Medievil 2 is more comical, but allows itself many triumphant and adrenaline-fuelled hits such as its boss themes. Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. As a parody of 80s crime films and TV shows, Vice City is as much a character as Tommy Vercetti. The game borrows a lot of inspiration from the 80s and uses its music well for its several radio stations, proceeding to raise awareness of the hits back then even today. Its implementation of music is as cheesy as everything else it does. Left 4 Dead: Not much to say on this one, it's chilling when it wants to be, provides alerts and cues when necessary, and the final victory songs make the player feel like it's not over and they've only bought themselves a brief respite. Regarding Doom (2016), I found the music to be sensory overload and just listened to the first two Doom games' soundtracks as they at least try different styles of song. It wasn't just heavy metal, Mick Gordon's contributions being one of the myriad reasons why I consider Doom 2016 to be 'Doom by committee.' That said it's a perfectly reasonable answer to the question. I guess my problem with it is its soundtrack is too pronounced and deliberate. Good choice. I think that's the first game or series of games that firmly grounded the importance of soundtrack in video games, and did a lot to elevate the medium. No longer were they just little ditties or background noise, Martin O'Donnell's music was as much a part of the game as the locales and characters.1 point -
I must admit, of all the games I expected to get a mention in this thread, Animal Crossing was right at the bottom of this list, but is what @Tonberry said is accurate and depending on what the social perspective of yourself is as the main character there could indeed be a lot more to this than meets the eye. I haven't played the games myself, but maybe my own preconceptions and assumptions about the franchise has led me to underestimate these games and develop something of a prejudice of my own about them. This is interesting and really want to learn more. Can either of you offer more information and/or media on this?1 point

@Yaramaki As an example, in Stray, you play a cat in a world of robots, but none of them really treat you as anything but a person; they don't question your cat-ness. Contrast that with say, Skyrim, where if you play a Khajit (cat person), you have to put up with racist comments and scorn from NPCs.1 point -

Mass Effect games are a big one, with the music setting the proper atmosphere and mood. That Normandy theme always gets me. I feel like Detroit: Become Human had some decent tracks too that enhanced the thrill and emotions of the scenes, like "Now", from Connor's chase sequence. God, that was so good. Made the scene so much more intense:1 point

I'll go through their reasonings and see if we can find some sense out of it. Here's hoping I can save people a click, but if you feel the need check out the video itself, be warned of how utterly hyperbolic it is. It uses evocative imagery and haunting music to disturb the viewer, which is not an argument for anything they're talking about. So first of all, they don't cite their source which is an immediate red flag. Statements from these questionnaires include 'I can see myself getting into a relationship with my character' and 'I consider my character a friend of mine'... but we're not told how that relates to the questions. They're flimsy quotes that may not even be real. Players of higher character attachment apparently had lower self-esteem. So are these characters causing them to have lower self-esteem, or is it that they can't get attached to people in real life because of low self-esteem (perhaps brought on by bullying, abuse, trauma, etc.?) It's true video games have been blamed for mass shootings... but blame mercifully does not automatically mean proof. This person does not provide any proof. The National Science Foundation has often praised video games and has been in favour of them, discussing accessability options for blind gamers who wish to play racing games, and discussing creativity. I've seen no such article for this person's claim though. Not much to say on this one. It's one thing to ask someone to pour hot sauce into a bowl for someone who doesn't like it; it's another to, y'know, murder someone. Epileptic Seizures: "The link between video games and epileptic seizures began to cause concerns from the early 1980s. The first documented case of a video game triggering epileptic seizures came in 1981. Shortly afterwards, console manufacturers required game publishers to include epilepsy warnings in the manuals, for games released on their devices. Seizures occur when a lack of neuronal regulation causes nerve activity to sync up." I think this video has lost all credibility with me when they quote the British hate-rag, The S*n. Yes, video games have been known to cause photosensitive seizures. This has been a disclosure in most games for at least a decade. ...and watching television, and using computers and laptops, and using virtual reality (VR) headsets, and reading print for too long. Problems with Bones and Muscles: "Medical journal The Lancet published a case report in 2004 which mentioned the PlayStation thumb in a 9-year-old boy. Rapid game play had caused friction between the thumb and the controller which had led to numbness and a blister. Frequent tendon injuries to the hands and wrists of Nintendo players have been dubbed ‘Nintendonitis’." Link to the letter to the Lancet here. I looked for examples of the blisters and swelling they listed, and could find only one, which err, doesn't look all that severe. At best it shows how crap the Dual Shock 2 was. Video games don't make people fat: eating too much cake and not moving enough make people fat. It's often said "abs are made in the kitchen" because of diet's influence on your health moreso than exercise (which is still vitally important; 20 minutes of pleasant breathlessness each day, folks!) Tragic but video games are not entirely to blame. People need to be responsible with their physical activity and leisure time. There are addictive things in video games and people are trying to clamp down on it, but this only gets in the way of those efforts. ...and that's where the video ends. No flipside, no attempts to balance the conversation, no real conclusion. Jesus wept in an RGB gaming chair.1 point -
Sadly I do not own a PS5, but I wouldn't mind getting one soon, or whenever I can financially afford it. I don't think I necessarily need one though, I feel like the catalog is still kinda small. I have a gaming PC as well, so I honestly don't see a point in rushing to get one, same with the Series X. I'm not seeing anything from either that would push me to purchase them yet anyway, especially since I feel pretty good with what I can get on PC at the moment. One of these days though, maybe I'll get one. 🙂1 point

Unless it's a game that I really wanted and it's been on my wishlist for awhile till it's out then I buy it, that being said it's not that often, might be lucky to buy outright on release once a year or not. I always end up buying games down the raod later at a good sale or price deal. There are games that I want to get that are coming, however it's the cost of the games that at times I say NOPE. Even with stray, it's £24 and yet I do not know if I want to get it, partly since it's 9 hours story and and of the day, I just end upwatching other people play yhr game in twitch and saving the time buying it and playing it myself.1 point

Zero purchases during game's first one week of release. I buy video games after some weeks passed or months, at times it is around three weeks of the game's release. At times, I wait like 2-3 months before getting the game. The reason is because, I want to learn from the fist timers of the game, if the game truly worth the money or another nightmare.1 point
