  1. I just realized I completely forgot to finish my profile. Another thing to do when I get home, but should be fun to put together.

  2. What are some unique ways that games have discouraged piracy? An Infocom game called Wishbringer a long time ago included physical items in the box that you needed to solve a puzzle in the game.

  3. In another thread, @Crazycrab and I were talking about how The Last of Us arguably could never be as good in a film format as it is in a video game format. Personally, I think that the reason for this is in part the sheer simplicity of the story. It is the kind of story that on a screen, I think some people would be left asking “Is there more …?” But in a video game, it worked brilliantly. This got me thinking about what makes for a good story in a video game. What do you look for in order to say that you really enjoyed a video game’s plot? My favorite video game stories are TLOU and the BioShock games. TLOU has a very simple, minimalist plot, whereas the BioShock games have fairly elaborate storylines. So, I think for me, how a story is told counts for more than the complexity or simplicity of a storyline in a game. What these stories do have in common is a strong focus on characters along with a focus on examining moral choices. So I guess that must be what I like in video game stories. What about you?

  4. I’ve noticed that when people discuss “immersion,” they are not always referring to the same thing. Usually, when I use this word, I mean “feeling like I am present in the game universe, like I am actually there.” But sometimes I see people use it to mean “emotionally invested in the game universe.” When people don’t realize they are using the same word with totally different meanings, confusion and miscommunication can ensue. When you use the term “immersion,” what is its definition for you?

Hello VGR! Happy to be here finally. I've been aware of the community for some time and finally took a moment to register.. 🙂 I'm mainly a PlayStation gamer / trophy hunter, though I do have a reasonably capable PC too. Look forward to networking and chatting with you all.

  6. Vice City didn't allow you to save if you had the bootleg copy of the game. As a matter of fact, there were many things you couldn't do.

  7. It's not that I've never liked it, but I must admit it's been at least two decades since I was genuinely interested. However, that also means I remember when the franchise was worth a damn. Back when the how radically different the tech was from one generation to the next meant the developers actually had to try. Before the absolutely vile monetisation schemes that are a now an inoperable tumor too deep into the body of the game to be removed were even so much as an idea. There are a couple of things that haven't changed, though. FIFA is not a choice, it's a lack of options. The monopoly EA holds with sports titles has been the bane of fans of these kinds of games for decades, whether they know it or not. It's also a habit. People buy the game year after year because it's what they, as fans of soccer/football, are supposed to do. They're compelled, as if it's written in thier programming. EA know this and even cement this mentality by resetting progression every time a new FIFA comes out. To EA, the player base are seeds they plant to harvest and not a damn thing more. This is not the way a gamer behaves. It's barely how a human being behaves. Gamers want and demand the very best out of the games they love, they don't "surrender to the programming" publishers desperately want them to and accept whatever they get. It's like an even deeper version of the fanboy mentality. FIFA is not a gamer's game, not even slightly. It exists for soccer fans, or to put it in a way more akin to modern FIFA, to exploit soccer fans. And you know what, it's the game's fans that are ultimately to blame for it because they put up with it, or even worse defend it year after year. Ironically, it's soccer fans in real life that provide the perfect example of how EA's FIFA fans should be behaving. When thier team, players or managers fuck up, the fans aren't the least bit shy about letting them know. They don't put up with excuses or accept less. You can agree or disagree with the manner some of them "express" themselves, but the point is that it's passion and love for the game and thier favourite teams that fuels all of it, so why can't FIFA fan's show thier passion by standing up and saying "We have had enough!" ?. Gamers did that with Battlefront 2 and won, it can happen. Soccer fans can stand up, gamer's can stand up, so I don't understand why fan's of EA's FIFA lay down.

  9. When you are watching someone else play games next to you, is it hard to restrain the urge to give them suggestions, especially if you see them making a really bad mistake or they are complaining about being frustrated?

  10. Sorry to hear of your uncle passing! Have you been able to learn anything? I think the best way to learn is first, to have the willingness to learn as well as the desire. There are loads of books, videos people can read & watch. When I learn something, I tend to learn on my own but I do like having a one on one to help me when I get stuck. Some people prefer classes as that fits their personality better.

  11. It's actually the movies of Lara Croft that made me took interest in the games of Tomb Raider. I really liked her character role playing.

  13. Ignoring the differences in the specs, I prefer the UI and the controller of the PlayStation 5. The PlayStation 5 UI looks great although I would have loved it if we had themes like the PS4 had. And the new features that came with the DualSense controller just makes the gaming experience a lot better.

  14. I don't care that the game sucks, Final Fantasy XIII has some of the most unique and memorable enemy designs I've seen in a game.

  16. Well written, relatable characters and an interesting world and setting are more important that a complex, unique plot in a video game, more so than a movie or TV show. I'm not saying complex plots are bad things, they really aren't and can enhance a gameplay experience greatly. I just feel that connecting with characters yourself control, rather than just observing them and exploring a world through your own eyes and actions rather just seeing it shifts the priorities that video games need to take as storytelling experiences.

  17. When it comes to gaming 9 times out of 10 the term "innovation" is a by word for experimental gimmick that barely friggin works. By now I think we have a pretty solid formula for what works and a controller or mouse and keyboard and a screen. Going back to the early days when companies would "innovate" with crap like the power glove, light guns, motion controls or more recently the Kniect and PlayStation move is the absolute last thing I wanna see. So aside from accessories that makes games more accessible for people with disabilities like the XBox Adaptive Controller (vid below) all I want is for my hardware to work.

  18. All I want for the future is good games, honestly when it comes to performance of consoles I'm pretty comfortable. Personally I'm not looking or expecting any innovating stuff but at the same time I feel that releasing a new console is pointless because there will be nothing "new" just improvements on what already exists, so the only thing I hope for the future is better games since for me thats what makes a console good.
